Revolutionizing Project-Based Learning

Revolutionizing Project-Based Learning

A Case Study on THINK Learning Studio's "PROP" Booklet as an Essential Ingredient in PBL Success.

Introduction:

THINK Global School (TGS) has always been at the forefront of innovative education, focusing on project-based learning (PBL) to foster a holistic learning experience. To maximise the potential of PBL, TGS introduced the Process Portfolio, “PROP” (Project, Reflection, Ownership, and Presentation) booklet some years ago to create a detailed artefact of the learner's journey, designed to track and assess students' learning and growth throughout their projects, and also to record notable periods of reflection.?

This case study explores the PROP booklet's implementation, benefits, and outcomes at TGS.

Implementation:

The PROP booklet used at the THINK Learning Studio (our professional development initiative) with our partners is a comprehensive guide for students and educators. It covers four key components of PBL:

  1. Project: Students define their project's goals, objectives, and deliverables, setting the stage for a focused and meaningful learning experience. This includes their rubrics, timelines and driving questions.?
  2. Reflection: Throughout the project, students engage in ongoing self-reflection to evaluate their progress, identify challenges, and develop strategies for improvement. We are currently promoting three reflection styles: descriptive, analytical and transformational.
  3. Ownership: Students take responsibility for their learning, setting personal goals, managing their time, and collaborating effectively with their peers and mentors.
  4. Presentation: At the project's conclusion, students showcase their work, demonstrating their mastery of the subject matter, communication skills, and critical thinking abilities.

Benefits:

The PROP approach and booklet provide numerous benefits for TGS students and educators:

  1. Enhanced Tracking and Assessment: The PROP booklet enables educators to track students' progress, identify strengths and weaknesses, and provide targeted feedback and support.
  2. Personalised Learning: Students can tailor their learning experience to their unique needs and interests by setting individual goals and self-reflecting.
  3. Accountability and Responsibility: The PROP booklet encourages students to take ownership of their learning, fostering a sense of agency and independence.
  4. Improved Communication: Students hone their communication skills by presenting their work, preparing them for future academic and professional endeavours.

Outcomes:

The introduction of the PROP booklet at TLS and TGS has resulted in the following:

  1. Improved Student Performance: Students using the PROP booklet have demonstrated higher levels of engagement, critical thinking, and project completion rates.
  2. Enhanced Collaboration: Educators report more vital collaboration among students as they work together to achieve their project goals and share their learning experiences.
  3. Positive Feedback: Students and educators have praised the PROP booklet's user-friendly format, comprehensive structure, and support throughout the PBL process.
