"Revolutionizing Postpartum Care: Global Roadmap Unveiled to Combat Maternal Mortality and Fast-Track Progress on PPH"

WHO recently released A Roadmap to Combat Postpartum Haemorrhage (PPH) between 2023 and 2030

Beyond Numbers

  • Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) affects 1 in 6 women giving birth and is defined as a blood loss of 500 ml or more within 24 hours of birth.
  • PPH is the leading cause of maternal mortality, accounting for over 20% of global maternal deaths.
  • High-income countries (HICs) have nearly eliminated deaths from PPH, but low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) still face significant challenges.
  • The global maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in 2020 was 216 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, indicating that countries are far from achieving the 2030 MMR target for sustainable development.
  • Progress in reducing maternal mortality has stalled in the past 5 to 10 years, and future projections through 2030 are worrisome.

Why Roadmap is Required

  • The PPH innovation landscape has seen limited progress over the past 30 years.
  • Research investments in effective PPH interventions and delivery methods are insufficient and fragmented.
  • Global, regional, and national norm developers invest separately in evidence syntheses, resulting in inconsistent guidance documents that create uncertainties for end-users, particularly in LMICs.
  • Implementation of proven interventions is hindered by multiple barriers that go beyond the adoption of global norms.
  • Civil society and non-governmental organizations' advocacy initiatives have the potential to drive global action but are underutilized in addressing PPH.

Scope of PPH Roadmap

  • The Roadmap is a high-level plan that outlines major milestones necessary to achieve the intended impact in addressing PPH challenges.
  • It includes alignment on goals, a timeline with significant milestones, activity sequencing, roles, responsibilities, and measurement indicators for success.
  • The Roadmap focuses on priorities identified during the Global Summit on Postpartum Haemorrhage (PPH Summit) in March 2023, covering research, norms and standards, implementation, and advocacy.
  • It proposes solutions and catalytic actions to address remaining challenges and significantly reduce PPH-related mortality and morbidity.
  • It serves as a mechanism to foster collaboration and coalitions to enhance maternal health, not limited to PPH but also encompassing the broader maternal and newborn health agenda.
