In a groundbreaking move, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is pioneering the use of AI-generated lecturers, including a virtual version of the legendary Albert Einstein. This innovative approach aims to transform teaching methods and provide students with an immersive learning experience like never before.
Through cutting-edge technology, students at HKUST wear virtual reality headsets to witness an AI-generated Einstein expounding upon the intricacies of game theory. Professor Pan Hui, Chair Professor of Computational Media and Arts at HKUST, spearheaded this project to address the global shortage of teachers while embracing the transformative power of AI in education.
The AI lecturers are not meant to replace human instructors but rather supplement them, offering diverse perspectives and innovative teaching methods. "This study not only offers students unique and exciting experiences but also inspires them to contemplate the application of AI across diverse fields. It also paves the way for pioneering research in AI-driven pedagogy," Professor Hui stated.
Using AI, lecture materials are transformed into customizable avatars, allowing for tailored presentations and enhanced engagement. This customization extends beyond visuals, encompassing voice, gestures, and even ethnicity. By introducing AI lecturers, human instructors are freed from mundane tasks, enabling them to focus on more interactive and personalized aspects of teaching.
Students have expressed excitement about the AI lecturers, as they bridge the gap between students and professors, fostering a more approachable, personalized, and interactive learning environment. However, a survey by the University of Hong Kong professor Cecilia Chan revealed a preference for human teachers due to their ability to provide unique experiences and empathetic feedback.

HKUST aims to further integrate interactive features into AI lectures, elevating the student learning experience to new heights. The university's dedication to leveraging AI in education is evident through its allocation of millions in funds and the introduction of an "AI Ambassador" to facilitate campus-wide AI integration.
As the world grapples with the challenges of education, HKUST's innovative approach to AI-generated lecturers is a testament to the potential of technology in transforming the way we learn and teach. By embracing AI, universities can unlock new possibilities and create more engaging and personalized learning experiences for students.
