Revolutionizing CNC Machining with GCODEAI Bot: A Creator's Tale & Demonstration of LLMs and GCODE

As the mind behind GCODEAI Bot, my aim was to bridge the gap between the intricate world of CNC machining and the intuitive ease of natural language. Today, I’m excited to not just talk about GCODEAI Bot's revolutionary approach but also to show it in action.? I have a number of friends that are machinists,? I’m also a user of tools like fusion 360.? While many designs are done in cad and cam I’ve also had exposure to the fact that many machinists never use these tools and enter GCODE directly into the CNC Machines.?? This can be laborious and at time can be error prone with a higher barrier to entry.?? That is what inspired me to create a custom GPT focused on helping machinists CNC Mill, 3d Print, Plasma cut parts based on a true conversation generative AI approach.

The Vision: The spark that ignited GCODEAI Bot was simple: make CNC machining accessible. The barrier wasn’t just the complexity of G-Code but also the disconnect between human thought and machine operation.

The Innovation: GCODEAI Bot represents a leap forward by interpreting natural language instructions and translating them into precise G-Code. It's not just a tool; it's a partner in the machining process.

A Real-World Example:

  • Prompt Given to GCODEAI Bot: "Create comprehensive G-Code for a CNC milling machine to create a hexagonal bolt-shaped pocket in mild steel. The pocket should have a flat-to-flat width of 2.36 inches, with a total depth of 0.300 inches. Each milling pass should cut deeper by 0.030 inches, using a .375 inch, 4 flute end mill."
  • Output: GCODEAI Bot processes this prompt, considering factors like tool selection and depth of cut. The result is a detailed G-Code script tailored for the specified task, ready to be executed.

Example GCODE:

After loading the gcode into the CNC Mill and doing a litlte tuning and validation the CNC machine spun to life and the following part was created to the exact specifications described in English.


Beyond the Tool: This demonstration underscores GCODEAI Bot’s and generaly speaking LLMs potential to transform ideas into tangible outcomes. It's about enhancing the machinist's ability to create, innovate, and bring visions to life with unprecedented ease.

Note: Not all gocode created is perfect and at times needs tweaking via an ongoing chat dialog to generate the correct code. ALL GCODE programs should be manually validated to ensure the operating parameters and cutting feeds, speeds and operations are within acceptable limits to make sure a machine does not crash or break tooling etc.
