Not long ago—just 10 to 15 years back—warehousing in India was synonymous with rudimentary storage: basic structures with four walls, a roof, and a few narrow entrances for dumping goods. For decades, these facilities were aptly called "go-downs." Today, however, the landscape is undergoing a remarkable transformation, with state-of-the-art warehouses, comparable to those in developed nations, emerging across the country.

Out of India's total 1.6 billion sq. ft. of warehousing space, approximately 350 million sq. ft. belongs to the organised sector—modern, semi-automated facilities. This segment employs nearly 450,000 individuals and is growing at an impressive CAGR of 15%. By 2027, the sector, including traditional warehouses, is projected to generate close to $35 billion in revenue, with an increasing share attributed to specialised services like contract logistics, express logistics, and cold chain management.?

Challenges in Warehousing

Building and operating a warehouse in India is not without its challenges. While large aggregators and developers ease the burden of navigating complex regulations, warehouse operators face operational challenges daily. From efficient goods movement and storage to maintaining uninterrupted electricity supply and workforce management, every detail matters.

Yet, a critical aspect of this growth story is the looming shortage of skilled labour in a nation of 1.4 billion people. The success of even highly automated warehouses hinges on the capabilities of skilled workers.

Why Skilled Workers Matter

Warehouse workers directly impact the volume and accuracy of goods handled. Their ability to correctly identify, label, store, and retrieve products efficiently affects overall productivity. The logistics industry operates on razor-thin margins, leaving no room for errors. For instance, a mislabelled or incorrectly picked product that must be returned and resent often results in a loss for the distributor.

Skilled workers not only enhance operational efficiency but also demonstrate greater engagement, alignment with company values, and lower attrition rates. However, employee turnover remains a pressing challenge for Indian companies, with annual rates ranging from 60% to 200%, and in retail, even soaring to 400%.
