The 2023–24 UMass Amherst Rising Researchers were honored at a reception in April.

Revolutionary Research Insider | Issue XVII

Twice a year, in the fall and spring, the University of Massachusetts Amherst honors undergraduate students who have made exceptional contributions to research, scholarship, or creative activity. Oftentimes, these students have already published their work, presented before a national gathering in their field, or otherwise had an impact beyond the borders of campus. This spring, UMass recognized six students pursuing amazing work in the fields of computer science, microbiology, biomedical engineering, theater, food science, and biochemistry and molecular biology.

Learn more about the spring 2024 Rising Researchers:

  • Owen Hurlbut Lesk '25 (biochemistry and molecular biology), whose research to improve understanding of protein folding in cells has possible implications for treating diseases such as diabetes.
  • Xiaoke Xiang '25 (food science), who uses a soft matter physics approach to develop plant-based meat and egg alternatives with realistic textures and comparable nutritional profiles to their animal-derived analogs.
  • Claudia Maurino '24 (theater; women, gender, sexuality studies), who has produced and directed two plays at the UMass Fringe Fest, including one she wrote herself.
  • Sophia Millan '24 (biomedical engineering), who studies the role of circadian rhythms in bone regeneration to identify potential new treatment approaches.
  • Adam Charest '24 (microbiology), whose research seeks to develop new natural antimicrobial treatments to help combat the rise in antibiotic-resistant microbes.
  • Ramita "Mimi" Dhamrongsirivadh '24 (computer science), who analyzes data from wearable sensors to better understand movement patterns in stroke survivors to aid their recovery.

Congratulations to the spring 2024 Rising Researchers, and all the UMass students who are pursuing their dreams and making a difference.
