Revolutionary recycling process transforms plastic waste | Domestically sourced lithium | Community-based clean energy solutions

Here's the latest roundup of clean energy news ??

Extracting a domestic supply of lithium from water and salt, and other important investments in innovation EERE is making.

DOE announced the winners of its first-ever?American-Made Geothermal Lithium Extraction Prize. Three teams will split a total of $2 million for innovations that directly extract lithium from the hot water used to produce geothermal energy. The U.S. currently imports about 99% of its lithium supply, so this could provide a domestic source for a critical element used in batteries and electric vehicles.

DOE granted over $6.3 million for six research projects to protect fish and reduce the environmental impact of hydropower on aquatic ecosystems. These technologies will enable the safe movement of fish around hydropower dams, protecting marine habitats while supporting the role of hydropower in a clean energy future.

An investment of $16 million in five projects will advance solid-state and flow battery manufacturing capabilities. The selected projects will establish capabilities or facilities dedicated to translating solid-state electrolyte research into large format/high-volume manufacturing.

EERE’s Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office renewed funding for the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII). The institute will receive an initial $6 million to advance the widespread adoption of smart manufacturing, a technology that remains crucial for the domestic competitiveness of clean energy manufacturing.

Decision-making at the local level

The?Clean Energy to Communities?(C2C) partnerships program developing custom decarbonization strategies and local clean energy solutions. C2C offers technical partnerships between DOE’s national lab experts and local governments, electric utilities, and community-based groups to help communities address climate challenges.

Climate Week 2023

A set of bold actions that will catalyze offshore wind energy and strengthen the domestic supply chain made its debut during climate week.?An Action Plan for Offshore Wind Transmission Development in the U.S. Atlantic Region outlines actions needed to connect the first generation of Atlantic offshore wind projects onto the electric grid.

What's happening in the sustainable transportation and fuels sector

EERE announced the winners of the Wood Heater Design Challenge . The $40,000 first prize went to Davidon Industries from Warwick, Rhode Island, for its mechanically automated combustion-air-control technology for cordwood heaters. Wood heater technology heats households affordably with cleaner, low carbon fuel, while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Much of the plastic Americans toss in the recycling bin cannot be recycled cost effectively. A new process from the?University of Wisconsin at Madison can now transform plastic waste into valuable chemicals , increasing the economic incentives for plastic recycling and creating additional opportunities to recycle new types of plastics.?

Meet the guy who wants to put a heat pump in every home?and building

Sometimes, John Palo wishes he could take his work home with him. Heat pumps fed by geothermal wells keep the buildings he oversees at the University of Utah warm in the winter and cool in the summer at nearly no cost, and he'd like to see the technology more widely used. "You don't have to sacrifice comfort or quality of life to reduce your energy usage."

Fellowship Opportunities

Applications are open for the?2024 Marine Energy Graduate Student Research Program , which supports full-time master’s and doctoral students working on a marine energy-focused research thesis or dissertation. Submissions are due by December 1.
