In the heart of the Bahamas, a centuries-old tradition is being rejuvenated by a man with a vision—Andrew A. Burrows. Once a computer engineer at the Bahamas Telecommunications Company, Andrew traded in his IT career for something far more connected to the rich history of his homeland. In 2011, he founded My Bahama Sponge, a 100% Bahamian-owned business, turning his attention to the age-old art of harvesting sea sponges from the pristine waters of Andros.
The Bahamian sponge industry has deep cultural significance, especially for descendants of freed slaves. After emancipation in 1838, many newly freed Bahamians sought livelihoods in the ocean, leading to the rise of the sponging trade. Sponging became a way of life, offering economic stability and independence. For years, Bahamian sponges were revered worldwide, with many being exported to Florida and Greece. However, the industry eventually dwindled, with few remaining to carry on the tradition—until now.
Andrew Burrows is breathing new life into this historical trade, offering not only a high-quality, eco-friendly product but also a connection to the past. Through My Bahama Sponge, he honors the legacy of those who came before him, working with local fishermen to ensure sustainable practices. Using a sharp tool, the sponges are carefully harvested to allow them to regenerate, ensuring that they can be re-harvested in the future—continuing a cycle that protects the ocean while supporting local livelihoods.

Under the guidance of veteran sponge harvester Mr. Ezra Green of Mangrove Cay, Andros, Andrew learned the intricate art of identifying and selecting the best sponges. Today, My Bahama Sponge offers a range of varieties, including the Wool, Grass, Soft Hardhead, and Hardhead sponges. These sponges, harvested from the Bahamian shoals, are used for everything from exfoliating skin in luxurious spas to cleaning household surfaces.
But Andrew’s contribution doesn’t stop with the physical product. His work is also about preserving the story of Bahamian resilience and resourcefulness. The sponging industry represents freedom, ingenuity, and sustainability—all qualities that define the Bahamian spirit. Every sponge from My Bahama Sponge is a symbol of this heritage, offering customers a chance to hold a piece of Bahamian history in their hands.
Now, with the launch of My Bahama Body Sponge, Andrew has expanded his vision to include beauty and health products. These natural sponges are hypoallergenic, gentle on all skin types, and provide a luxurious alternative to synthetic options. As naturally bacteria-resistant sponges, they offer a safe, eco-friendly choice for anyone looking to enhance their self-care routine.
Andrew Burrows is not only reviving an industry but also championing the sustainable future of Bahamian sponging. His work reminds us that sometimes the greatest innovations come from looking back at the wisdom of the past, all while moving forward with purpose and care. Through My Bahama Sponge, Andrew is ensuring that this historic trade continues to thrive, benefiting both the people and the environment of the Bahamas for generations to come.
