Reviving Giants: Transforming the Industry, One Truck at a Time

When AMMAN acquired the Batu Hijau mine in 2016, we faced numerous significant challenges in our efforts to enhance the efficiency and productivity of the mining operation. One of AMMAN’s primary areas of focus for improvement is operational efficiency, with the cost of trucks playing a significant role in contributing to operational costs.

Back then, many of the giant Caterpillar 793 C haul trucks, necessary for carrying ore from the pit, sat idle for months in Batu Hijau mine, queueing up to be shipped to distant Samarinda, Kalimantan for mandatory rebuilds. This waiting period resulted in unproductive capital and potential high bills that significantly contributed to the overall operational cost.

Nevertheless, as part of AMMAN’s innovative problem-solving approach, we proactively addressed this challenge by opting for an in-house solution to rebuild the trucks while meeting Caterpillar’s stringent standards, based at the Batu Hijau site.

At AMMAN’s Batu Hijau rebuild facility, we efficiently disassemble each truck's components and rebuild them in just 23 days. The cost for each rebuild has dramatically decreased, now representing only about 35% of the expenses incurred compared to before establishing our own rebuild facility. In addition, we also significantly reduced fuel consumption required for the shipment to Samarinda.

By having direct control of our own operations, AMMAN achieved substantial cost savings while reaffirming our dedication to excellence. This endeavor underscored AMMAN's cultural strengths and capabilities, proving our adeptness in meeting the exacting standards set by Caterpillar and fostering a more robust and enduring partnership with them.
