A Lucky Makeover: Bringing Our PTA Website to Life
In 2023, as our elementary school’s PTA began to find its stride again after a few years of pandemic-related inactivity, we realized that our website needed more than just a simple update—it required a complete overhaul. I was excited to jump in and help, especially since my family had just moved to the area and my son was starting at the school. I quickly noticed that the website information was outdated, and as a parent eager to get involved, I wanted to stay informed about the upcoming school year. I figured other parents might feel the same way, so I decided to offer my skills. I reached out to the PTA leadership with my website design expertise, and they welcomed my help. We decided to start from scratch, completely rebuilding and rebranding the site to better meet our school’s needs.
Reimagining the website was a collaborative effort. I worked closely with other PTA volunteers to gather the latest information on events, clubs, and more. Together, we built out a current calendar, a comprehensive list of PTA volunteers with their contact information, and much more. Our goal was to create a resource that was both informative and easy to navigate for our vibrant school community.
A significant part of the rebranding involved using our school’s mascot, Lucky the Penguin, as the base for all of our graphic design. We had a lot of fun dressing him up for each page, giving the site a playful yet cohesive look that represents the spirit of our school.
A New Year and New Opportunities
This year, I expanded my involvement by taking on the role of managing the PTA's social media on Facebook and Instagram. I’ve been developing new skills, particularly in graphic design using Canva. Lucky’s adorable presence continues to inspire creativity, making the design work a breeze.
Currently, our website is housed on Weebly, but in the coming months, I’ll be moving it over to Squarespace. I’m excited about the transition, as it will give us even more flexibility and creative options.
In addition, our PTA is now utilizing Google for Nonprofits. We’ll be reissuing volunteer email addresses with our new domain, and with my experience with Google Admin, I’m thrilled to help our PTA leadership get this initiative off the ground.
We are definitely making an impact as we get our families back in the groove of checking our social media accounts and/or our website!
Working with a nonprofit organization like the PTA has provided me with a huge amount of creative freedom. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about being able to support such a wonderful organization while also honing my creative and strategic skills. Without the typical pressures of a professional environment, I’ve found real joy in the process. It is a nice way to spend my time and hone my skills while I continue to look for my next role.
