Revitalize Your Routine: Proven Methods for Sustainable Energy
As I was in my early days of recovering from burnout, I believed that recovery was also something to achieve.
Things to do. New techniques to learn.
Breathwork. Meditation.?
Self-care. Walking. Yoga.
Lifestyle change is important.??
While it was refreshing and even relieving that I was opening up to a whole new world of health and wellbeing, it was a lot!
Bottom line, I couldn’t keep up, and I became overwhelmed and blamed myself for not being able to effectively recover fast enough.
Then I fell in and out of old unhealthy habits, saying: “how do I not burnout again?”, while still feeling miserable.
Eventually, I learned that my approach was incorrect, and it wasn’t about adding more to my chronically stressed life, it was about subtracting from it.
Perform An Energy Audit
We’re creatures of habit and often, we take that for granted.? Habits are a good thing, especially if they are healthy habits and sustainable behaviors that help us achieve our goals.
More flow. Less cognitive load.
Just as the Parento principle applies, 20% of our chronic stressors make up 80% of our mental and emotional pain.
We unconsciously sabotage our wellbeing because our energy-draining habits we’ve created predictably lead us to unwanted stress.
How we do it. When we do it.?
What we do. Where we do it.?
Even who we do it with.
Like clockwork, it traps us in a perpetual cycle of stress and we suffer.? Often, those bad habits compounded with our environment and conditions overwhelm us, and out of sheer emotional exhaustion, we give up.
We can end up giving up on our careers, family, and relationships.? We can even give up on our aspirations, and life can get pretty bleak and depressing.
So how can we take a focused and predictable approach to our recovery without giving everything up?
The goal is to identify all our habits, which could be daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly.
How draining are they?
What are the typical emotions?
What area of life does it impact the most?
Then we can systematically begin to prioritize and focus on addressing the root causes of our energy-draining habits, one habit at a time.
Prune Energy Draining Habits
I like to relate burnout recovery to driving a car.
What enriches us and moves us forward is like putting the foot on the accelerator. What drains us and sets us back is like putting the foot on the brakes.
We can take non-action and not step on any pedals and let the momentum carry us. Slamming hard on both the gas and brake pedals will wear and tear the car and actually lead to burnout.
Pruning our energy-draining habits is effectively taking the foot off the brakes.

Don’t boil the ocean.
Burnout eats willpower for breakfast and can be extremely challenging to deal with alone as habits (by design) are hard to break.
Coupled with being emotionally de-regulated, our instincts run the show and we lock ourselves in stress and survival.
