Revitalising Rural Health Financing: Updates from Villa Maria & Nkozi Hospitals

This report summarizes the findings from support mobilization visits conducted at Villa Maria Hospital (Feb 14-15, 2024) and Nkozi Hospital (Feb 16-17, 2024). The objective of these visits was to assess progress on Stre@mline Ubuntu's RRHF (Revitalising Rural Health Financing) project implementation and identify areas for further improvement.

Villa Maria Hospital:

Progress on Deliverables:

  • 23 groups were established, encompassing 3,705 members. A detailed update on progress will be provided in March 2024.
  • Promising Leads: Mapeera Secondary School: 650 students identified with high potential for CHI enrollment. Meetings with the headteacher confirm an agreement to collect premiums by March end. Kyamusoke Primary School: 305 pupils; an MoU was signed with the school during the visit, and premiums are due this term. Standard Hill Secondary School: 250 students; the headteacher agreed to sign the MoU and collect premiums. All premium registration forms were delivered to the school.
  • Collaboration: Working with Community Development Officers (CDOs) proved more effective than LC1 chairpersons due to their extensive community connections.
  • CRM System: The Customer Relationship Management system was successfully set up and updated with information on all 23 groups and 3,705 members.
  • Member Update: 1,726 members registered 953 members with active insurance 773 members with expired insurance
  • Printing Update: Printing of membership cards began on February 10th, and feedback regarding card size was received.

Nkozi Hospital:

Progress on Deliverables:

  • 280 groups were established, consisting of 9,773 members.
  • Lwamanya Savings Group: This group with 135 members will be sharing savings on February 28th. They requested the CHI Coordinator's presence to receive payments, and an estimated 20 families are expected to pay for CHI on that date.
  • Nkozi University Students: Onboarding of students into the CHI program is underway, potentially adding 2,000 new members.
  • PEWOSA SAACOs: Discussions regarding MoU signing are ongoing, targeting 2,000 members by the end of April 2024.
  • Information Dissemination: Currently, churches are employed to disseminate information about the CHI program. However, the CHI Coordinator suggested utilizing local village speakers and influencers instead of radio and will provide further details for planning and execution.
  • Member Update: 735 members registered 503 members with active insurance 232 members with expired insurance
  • CRM System: The CRM system was successfully established and updated with information on all 280 groups and 9,773 members.
  • Membership Cards: The printing of cards is complete, and they are functioning well.

Overall Observations:

Both hospitals demonstrated significant progress in mobilizing communities and onboarding new members into the CHI program. Promising leads were identified in schools and savings groups, indicating potential for further growth. Collaboration strategies like working with CDOs and local influencers were found to be beneficial in reaching wider audiences.

Recommendations:

  • Continued follow-up and support are crucial to ensure successful membership conversion and retention.
  • Exploring alternative communication channels like local influencers and village speakers alongside existing strategies can foster wider program awareness.
  • Addressing the feedback regarding membership card size should be considered to improve user experience.

Next Steps:

  • The mobilization team will continue to work closely with the hospitals to achieve their CHI program goals.
