REVIT PRO TIPS - Template Management

REVIT PRO TIPS - Template Management

Why Add Family Content to Revit Templates?

We see Revit templates that are 50mb + and contain huge amounts of content – WHY?

Problems with this strategy:

  • Adds bloat to projects
  • Purged content is difficult to reinstate
  • Time consuming to add new content to projects

?

Alternative Template Strategy

Don’t put your family content in the Revit Template!

Consider storing it in centralized repository files (warehouses / showroom files), with only placeholder elements in the template.

These can be accessed manually, or much faster using a dedicated solution such as our BIMflow plugin (shown below), or the Avail management system.

Benefits…

  • Single source of content that is always up to date and easy to manage
  • Revit template can be fully loaded with predefined views, legends, sheets etc. and still be below 10mb
  • Lighter and faster project Revit files – only the required content resides in each file
  • Content should be consistent and reliable across all projects.

That's right, although a subtractive template strategy can work if well implemented.

Definitely prefer a clean template with a content management system.
