Revisiting the Scrum Framework

Hello again LinkedIn Friends & ?

Recently, I had the opportunity to renew my Certified Scrum Master (CSM) credentials, extending them through January 2026.? Thoroughly enjoyed revisiting the scrum framework, and why it can make such an impact on Software Development & Business Product Value.? In this article, I will share a quick overview of the framework.?

First, thanks and shout out to the Scrum Alliance, for providing excellent resources allowing my achievement of the? 20 Scrum Education Units (SEUs), necessary to demonstrate continued excellence in understanding industry trends, adopting new techniques, and practicing organizational agility.

What is Scrum ?

According to The Scrum Guide?, Scrum is "a lightweight framework that helps people, teams, and organizations generate value through adaptive solutions for complex problems." Scrum stands as the most widely used and popular agile framework. The term "agile" describes a specific set of foundational principles and values for organizing and managing complex work.

While rooted in software development, today, Scrum refers to a lightweight framework utilized across industries to deliver complex, innovative products and services that genuinely delight customers. It is simple to understand but challenging to master.

Here's my take on the Scrum Framework:

The Goal:? Generate Product Value in increments delivered in 2-4 weeks.

The Scrum Framework:??

Build a Product Backlog: containing all the tasks needing attention, and then distill that backlog into components that could yield the best results based on business objectives, time, quality, or features.

Next, host a Sprint Planning: meeting. Here, developers, product owners, and resource teams meet to select items from the backlog that can deliver incremental value to the product by the end of the Sprint. Normal Sprints typically last between 2-4 weeks.

During the Sprint: The team meets daily to discuss their progress toward delivering incremental value, collaborate on blockers, provide status updates, and share ideas. This emphasizes the Scrum Master's role in facilitating communication and collaboration among team members.

At the end of the Sprint, each team member presents their incremental value during the Sprint Review, showcasing their work across the team.

Finally, in the Sprint Retrospective: The team builds trust by discussing what went right, what went wrong, and how things can improve in the next Sprint. This highlights the Scrum Master's role in conflict resolution and fostering a positive work environment.

At some point during the Sprint, the team also meets to groom the Product backlog, providing clear, concise details that make the incremental value of the tasks apparent and right-sized for delivery in the next Sprint.

The process then begins again at the Sprint Planning meeting.

The agility of this process enables the team to pivot each Sprint, delivering precisely the effective product features necessary to showcase product value to customers. This showcases the importance of the Scrum Master's leadership skills in guiding the team through the Scrum process and promoting a culture of continuous improvement.
