Revisiting Networking in 2024: A Personal Exploration

Have you ever felt out of place among a sea of new faces? In 2024, I plunged back into the networking scene to test a theory: that despite our hyper-connected world, we are starved for genuine human interaction.
This idea led me to explore whether our technological advancements, dominated by social media and AI, were making our social and esteem needs more difficult to satisfy.
Formation of RewindConnect
My findings confirmed the importance of human connection. This realization inspired me to create RewindConnect—a private community where business owners unite and mentor the next generation. This platform is dedicated to fostering deep, meaningful, and authentic relationships, a result of the many observations from the networking events I've witnessed.
I thought that perhaps I could share those anecdotes and observations with my readers.
Anecdote 1: The Shallow Exchange
At one event, a young professional tried to meet as many people as possible by quickly sharing his job title and moving on. I recall that he spent no more than 2 minutes with every attendee at the event. He had a goal obviously, to know more people than for others to know him.
Despite exchanging LinkedIn profiles, his rapid interactions left no lasting impression; we couldn't even recall his name. Unlike him, I connected deeply with just three individuals that night, but these connections were profound and enduring.
Anecdote 2: Networking Without Job Titles and Themes
At another event, we were challenged not to discuss our jobs for the first hour. This rule was enlightening—it made me think about who I am beyond our professional identities. At a wine tasting event, the inability to talk about the wine initially led to awkward silences, highlighting our over-reliance on common interests as conversational crutches. I was also encouraged to join a car club for observation, but then I realized most of us couldn't talk about anything else except cars!
Anecdote 3: Observations on Social Interactions

I observed my social interactions with friends as well. Frequently, our conversations default to familiar topics like jobs, personal achievements, or hobbies. However, these discussions often mask our true selves. I often wanted more, asking deeper and more intriguing questions. But I notice the tendency for some to revert back to the same topics. It was as if they were anchored to them and that their lives were centered around them.
Reflecting on this, I realized that the attributes and achievements we typically boast about are less significant than we think.
My Realization: The Value of Personal Stories
In 2024, I discovered that people are drawn to your personal stories, motivations, and passions—these elements reveal your true character. Sharing these personal aspects invites deeper connections that go beyond superficial interactions.
The Essence of Authentic Connections: Why This Matters
True networking isn't about expanding your contact list; it's about expanding your understanding of others and letting them see the real you. By sharing more than just your professional achievements, you open up avenues for genuine connections. What remains when we strip away our external labels is the core of who we are—explore that core, share it, and watch your relationships transform.
We must be self-aware.
If we can understand and practice this approach, it benefits us by fostering genuine connections that are richer and more fulfilling than those based solely on professional or social status. These authentic relationships can support personal growth and greater satisfaction in both personal and professional spheres.
Takeaway
Next time you find yourself in a networking situation, ask yourself, "What's my story?", "What's my hook?". Let that guide your interactions, and you may find the connections you make are not just more numerous but significantly more meaningful.
