When we look back on life; rapid flashes of our distant childhood and earlier years can almost feel like a whizzing figment of our imagination...or, on the contrary; invoke an emotion so strong, you can remember the past as if it were only yesterday...which is exactly the effect Author Miriam Weisbrod accomplished in her nostalgic autobiographical poetry collection entitled; Poetry From My Heart.
To begin, Miriam delivered exceptional writing quality pertaining to her poetry and the overall structure of the book. Using a simple, yet sharp rhyme scheme; verses are interconnected in perfect harmony, enhanced by lucid imagery, both verbal and photographic. in addition to this, a variety of creative aspects are consistently reflected in her writing including; word play; realism; surrealism; illustration; symbolism; humor; similes; metaphors; nature; narration; personification; riddles; and even some satire! With a steady combination of each of these elements; her poetry is surely alive!
Considering the element of organization, the poems follow one another in an orderly synchronized fashion that helps to build her story up; and as they do, you are able to clearly trail the evolution of the author's life, with each poem attached to a specific time frame that indicates an age range; like the poem entitled; The Cradle. A sweet poem that represents the fond days of Miriam’s infancy - when sparkly rattles, cute teenie weenie booties, blankets as soft as feathers, soothing lullabies, and ‘the cradle’ provided a warm sense of comfort and peace of mind. We believe it was a clever and original idea to use the ‘cradle’ theme as an introduction to the ‘birth’ of her own story, plus an ingenious way of initiating her autobiographical timeline!
The first series of poems in the book appear to be recollections from her youth; like the poem; Castor Oil, an undeniable classic! Miriam takes you back to the yesteryear of 1929 when castor oil was at its prime, commonly used to fight against the anticipated winter colds. Contrasting the medicine from times of old, to the present day; this poem was spirited with a historically antique tone, not to mention the matching illustration that captures perfectly the pure essence of this poem! It’s relatable, possesses a bit of humor, and is a generational truth; in fact, some people still continue to use this traditional remedy even still today!
While reading allows the mind to imagine and conceive the written scene more than a movie or live picture; with Miriam’s poetry, at times, it feels as if you are watching a reminiscent memoir documentary in full color, high definition! And every bit of it holds your attention. In result, the content of this collection is enthusiastically animated, allowing different shades of the author’s vivacious personality to radiate through her poetic accounts like the sun, always setting the proper atmosphere and mood for each poem.
Therefore, in many instances, it is quite difficult to resist the gratifying sensation to imagine the delightful cherry tree she once used to climb upon; which she cheerfully relives in the poem entitled; Cherry Tree. In fact, we learn by reading this book that Miriam particularly fancies the cherry tree, with a whimsical dream and desire to one day blossom a dulcet cherry garden of her own; which she mentions in her poem entitled; My Dream. As you place yourself temporarily in the setting of the author’s dream, your perceptive senses are prone to stimulation as you find yourself yearning for the fresh, sweet aroma of delightful red roses written of in the poem; Red Roses. It’s captivating presence is like an enchanting ode and tribute to the red rose, classifying it above all other roses, as ‘the queen’.
Reading further into Miriam’s life, poems like; Stars and Stripes, which was the name of an actual newspaper many American soldiers would read while overseas, appropriately display the connection and knowledge she has regarding the United States Military. The fact that the title of the poem is more than a figurative one adds immense value and authenticity to this piece and is parallel with her rooted patriotic background and association.
She expresses honor towards those who sacrifice their life to protect and defend in her prestigious dedication entitled; Patriot; the “brave, proud, and tall”. Yet the best part about Miriam's story of patriotism and devout loyalty is documented in an old newspaper article at the end of this book, which tells us how Miriam, from Brooklyn, sailed to Panama to marry her husband, Sergt. Simon Weisbrod. This extraordinary photographic article also includes a stunning picture of the beautiful Miriam Kas Weisbrod, as she sailed off to marry her husband! It is, indeed, a priceless moment in time.
Then there are an abundance of precious notable elements like: advice; truth; insight; and wisdom which are all automatically inclusive to the author’s winning creativity! One poem in which we found supremely significant to our current fast-paced society is; It Takes Time. A poem that teaches the importance of patience. When everything around you appears to be moving at the speed of light, Miriam compassionately reminds us; “Everything takes time”.
All in all, this ebullient collection of poetry is a clear reflection of an outstanding and lovely woman whom lived a beautiful blessed life, and was able to add to her story by producing this brilliant timeless literary treasure, such as this masterpiece! And after reading only a few of the poems, it is quite evident why Miriam’s heart refuses to let her forget the past; as such golden beloved memories are simply unforgettable!
The time, effort, love, heart, truth, and dedication contributed towards the making of this composition is obvious! From the entertaining black and white sketches, to the melodious correspondence of sound between her words and rhymes; all the way to her zesty energy and outlook on life... this book left deep impressions on the heart and soul and was more than an inspiration to live life to the fullest.
Without a doubt, this book deserves 5 stars, and it is our honor to rate it as so. It was an extraordinary collection of literature, and a portrait of a beautiful life.
