Review of Matthew Chapter 1 “The Old Testament Is All About Jesus”
As we return to the Matthew Series I thought a quick review of our Gospel’s Foundational First Chapter important as it reminds us how we are to read in Context the entire Volume.
Matthew, also known as Levi, is a studied and well-educated Apostle, who the HOLY SPIRIT uses to show us that the whole Bible from Genesis through at His writing Malachi has been only pointing to ONE Figure Our LORD Jesus Christ!
I have tried to point out that to the First Century Reader and for most part listener, the opening line in Matthew, would case them to need a seat, and catch their breath as it is Earth shaking.
Matthew is stating in the First Line, This IS The ONE and ONLY MESSIAH, and walking us through the Genealogy, He is saying IT IS CRYSTAL Clear, and actually without a doubt, as you can follow the line!!!.
Our Next lesson keeping this review in mind is on Matthew Chapter 17 Part 1, it was the Lesson we finished with when we entered Lent and Easter Tide, and will be the last review as we resume our Matthew series with only a few exceptions now through October.

Passing of the Peace of Christ
May The Peace Of Christ Be With You
ALL: And Also With You
Please Take A Minute To Pass The Peace Of Christ On Facebook
This Tradition comes from Jesus sending the Disciples out two by two Matthew 10:12 "As you enter the house, give it your greeting.
?13 "If the house is worthy, give it your blessing of peace. But if it is not worthy, take back your blessing of peace.
?14 "Whoever does not receive you, nor heed your words, as you go out of that house or that city, shake the dust off your feet.

First Reading Genesis 32:17-32
17 He commanded the one in front, saying, "When my brother Esau meets you and asks you, saying, 'To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and to whom do these animals in front of you belong?'
?18 then you shall say, 'These belong to your servant Jacob; it is a present sent to my lord Esau. And behold, he also is behind us.'"
?19 Then he commanded also the second and the third, and all those who followed the droves, saying, "After this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him;
?20 and you shall say, 'Behold, your servant Jacob also is behind us.'" For he said, "I will appease him with the present that goes before me. Then afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me."
?21 So the present passed on before him, while he himself spent that night in the camp.
?22 Now he arose that same night and took his two wives and his two maids and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
?23 He took them and sent them across the stream. And he sent across whatever he had.
?24 ? Then Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak.
?25 When he saw that he had not prevailed against him, he touched the socket of his thigh; so the socket of Jacob's thigh was dislocated while he wrestled with him.
?26 Then he said, "Let me go, for the dawn is breaking." But he said, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."
?27 So he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob."
?28 He said, "Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed."
?29 Then Jacob asked him and said, "Please tell me your name." But he said, "Why is it that you ask my name?" And he blessed him there.
?30 So Jacob named the place Peniel, for he said, "I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been preserved."
?31 Now the sun rose upon him just as he crossed over Penuel, and he was limping on his thigh.
?32 Therefore, to this day the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew of the hip which is on the socket of the thigh, because he touched the socket of Jacob's thigh in the sinew of the hip.

Christian What Do You Believe?
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The Holy Catholic Church; (this is the Holy World Wide Church of Jesus Christ and not singled out to the Roman Catholic Church) The Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body, And the Life everlasting. Amen.

Second Reading? Matthew Chapter 1
Mt 1:1 ? The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham:
?2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers.
?3 Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez was the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram.
?4 Ram was the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon.
?5 Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab, Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse.
?6 Jesse was the father of David the king. David was the father of Solomon by Bathsheba who had been the wife of Uriah.
?7 Solomon was the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asa.
?8 Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah.
?9 Uzziah was the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah.
?10 Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, and Amon the father of Josiah.
?11 Josiah became the father of Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.
?12 After the deportation to Babylon: Jeconiah became the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel.
?13 Zerubbabel was the father of Abihud, Abihud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor.
?14 Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud.
?15 Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob.
?16 Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah.
?17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations.
?18 ? Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.
?19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.
?20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
?21 "She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins."
?22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
?23 "BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, "GOD WITH US."
?24 And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife,
?25 but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.

Lesson Review of Matthew Chapter 1
Verse 1, Is the Most Important Verse In The Book of Matthew and Perhaps the best table setter for our understanding of all of the New Testament as it Tells Us Right Out Of The Gate Jesus Is The Messiah!
A quick recap from our lesson just after? Christmas reminds us that the way we see the list in Matthew 1 actually tells us how we actually read the and understand GOD’S Word in general .
To be blunt, if we see this list of names as the Righteous we actually read the Bible Pharisaical.
If we read the List as a collection of Sinners saved by Grace alone and as we too are totally unrighteous save Christ alone then we probably are grasping the Word of GOD.
Please believe me I wish this was the teaching of the Church, yet again on Sunday the “Pastor” taught on a passage where he told us what we needed to do and used the

To somehow conclude this was about Man doing something when the Lead was who?
YES the HOLY SPIRIT, and as in our personal Salvation it is the HOLY SPIRIT who awakens us from the dead and makes us alive in Christ.
?
But Matthew, ?Announces What?
Mt 1:1 ? The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham
That’s correct and a bit of our review as our Levite trained author is telling us bluntly that Jesus is without a doubt the coming Messiah!
To the original audience the very opening of this Book would have been EARTHSHAKING, STUNNING, KNOCKS YOU TO THE FLOOR Type, and NO this is NOT an overstatement but is actually still understated.
In our 21st Century understanding post Messianic appearance we have NOT been for Thousands of years been anticipating the coming of the Messiah, but instead we look back to this true event, however to Matthew’s audience and by His training He is telling us “THIS IS THE PROMISED MESSIAH PERIOD!
Yes it is ALL CAPS!!
Matthew is also walking us through the Genealogy of Jesus to clear explain, and he of all has the Background and education to be able to say this with authority, that ALL of the Old Testament points to Jesus as the Messiah.
We must keep Matthew Chapter 1 in mind as we read through the entire New Testament as it reminds us that the whole message is the same and points to Jesus and HIS rescue of we sinners.
It is why we have not skipped past the genealogy but indeed dwelled on it for two weeks.
This will walk us to our second point, as Joseph appears on the scene and to We Protestants perhaps one of the most overlooked men in the Bible.
We need to see just how amazing the Narrative really is;
Have you noticed that there are many bookends in the Bible, that is to say, we have two passages that are similar to the others.
What do I really mean?
In Genesis 3 we see the Shame of our first sin in the understanding of our nakedness where the SEED of the Woman our pre-incarnate Christ tells Adam and Eve HE is going to cover their sin and pay their debt.
Oh Yes he really does say this and will even bear the bookend of the Shame of Nakedness when HE is hung on the Cross.
Joh 19:23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece.
?24 So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be"; this was to fulfill the Scripture:, "THEY DIVIDED MY OUTER GARMENTS AMONG THEM, AND FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CAST LOTS."
The sculptures of Christ on the Cross kind in covering of HIS midsection, and yet part of the crucifixion is the shame of hanging naked for days.
To help us understand the Bible better we need to be aware of these bookends, and this brings us to our Bookend today.
Did you notice at the end of the Genealogy two important names?
??16 Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah.
Yes we have another combination of a Jacob as the Father and Joseph as the protector of His Family, and given a heart to obey the LORD.
We also see and this speaks against the way a “pastor” just spoke to a parishioner that I overheard when he say Ps 34:15 The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous And His ears are open to their cry.
?16 The face of the LORD is against evildoers, To cut off the memory of them from the earth.
?17 The righteous cry, and the LORD hears And delivers them out of all their troubles.
?18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted And saves those who are crushed in spirit.
?19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all.
?20 He keeps all his bones, Not one of them is broken.
?21 Evil shall slay the wicked, And those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
?22 The LORD redeems the soul of His servants, And none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned.
(NAS95)
Reading this as if the passage was telling them that 19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all.
As if it were a promise of Comfort in this world when indeed that may NOT be the case but the promise of Comfort in our eternal home.
Heb 11:10 for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
Had our Pastor correctly brought the passage, he would have said, “this is an eternal promise, and though it may not happen in our lifetime on this Earth it is assured in Christ Alone.
He would have also reminded the Parishioner who alone is Righteous and alone can grant HIS standard of Righteousness to we the Unrighteous not out of ANY of our deserving but out of straight mercy toward some.
That again sets up the Joseph who will be the protector of Israel (Jacob) saving them as they go where?
Yes Egypt!
Remember this for next week.
Our point is that the LORD has ordained this next pair of Jacob and Joseph’s to perform one of the greatest job of parenting ever, and He by GOD’S Grace is charged raising our Savior in Childhood.
This takes us to our third point
?
The Virgin Will Be With Child
?
20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
Fulfilling The Prophesies Genesis 3, fulfilled in Matthew 1, Luke 1 22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
?23 "BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which translated means, "GOD WITH US."
?24 And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife,
?25 but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.
?
Can you imagine for a second how Joseph must have thought when He found out Mary was Pregnant, and in a day when a woman and the father of the child could be stoned to death for adultery.
Joseph however has been given the Heart of compassion by the LORD, and we find he is going to send her away quietly, as He wants no harm to come to her.
Let’s now for a second trade places if we could with Joseph, and as my Brother John has said in His sermon, “If I was Joseph I would be afraid to go a sleep as in the next couple of weeks we will see that He will be visited two more times in dreams , and by GOD’S Grace do what is asked of Him.
But how would we react to such a visit?
To be fair, the Middle East is to this day more of a land of dreams as it was then, and THEY ARE REAL Dreams.
So Joseph will not be as fully shocked as we would,? but still a visit by angel would have to get our attention, and completely stun us.
Next What do we find in this Joseph?
To be honest and by the Grace of GOD He is one of the ONLY people in the Bible who does NOT challenge the LORD, and this is of the LORD’S doing.
Please note in each and every occurrence Joseph DOES NOT say But how can this be, but instead does what He is told in remarkable circumstances.
He has been told the Mary is Pregnant by the HOLY SPIRIT and He believes it, He will be told to Take the Family to Egypt and will do it, with no argument, He will be told to go back to Judah and does it, and is told to go to Nazareth and again goes it.
It is about the end of what we know in written text about Joseph, but we know He must have been used mightily of the LORD and Jesus upbringing was unremarkable and that says a lot.
In fact the last time we hear of our beloved brother is in Luke 2:42 And when He became twelve, they went up there according to the custom of the Feast; ….. Lu 2:48 When they saw Him, they were astonished; and His mother said to Him, "Son, why have You treated us this way? Behold, Your father and I have been anxiously looking for You."
It is the last time we hear of Joseph, and as I would like to tell this Pastor who was speaking the “promise” of the Righteous” to the Parishioner, “First the only one who has EVER Been Righteous is Jesus Christ alone, by HIS adoption of us gives us HIS Righteousness alone, I would then say, our Brother Joseph will be Dead by the time Jesus Ministry is underway as His purpose and duty has been completed and His orders to report home given.
Sadly Many Pastors, and Parishioners forget things may NEVER get better on this side of life, but rest assured in Jesus Christ alone they ARE Guaranteed in Heaven for those in Christ!

Glorious Things Of THEE Are Spoken
?
The Feast Of Our LORD
1st Corinthians 11:23 ? For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread;
?24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me."
?25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."
?26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes.
?27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.
?28 But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
?29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly.
