THE INSIDE VIEW OF UK FASHION & BEAUTY
It’s beginning to feel as though there aren’t enough luxury fashion labels for the amount of Creative Directors and CEOs who are exiting or jumping ship in recent months.
马莎百货 has appointed ex-Boohoo CEO John Lyttle as its new Managing Director of Clothing, Home & Beauty, as well as a new Director of M&S Woman and Director of Home & Beauty, as it sets out to "transform" its Clothing, Home & Beauty business.
Yesterday morning, many will have woken to the news that Sabato De Sarno is leaving his post as Creative Director of Gucci, described by the luxury house as the “end of its collaboration” with the Italian designer, who took over from Valentino’s Alessandro Michele in January 2023. De Sarno changed the course of the brand’s aesthetic from Michele’s maximalism tout suite upon arrival, receiving mixed reviews from critics. Undoubtedly, the fashion rumour mill will already be working overtime as regards who will take his place.
It was also announced this week that Dior Homme would be parting ways with Artistic Director Kim Jones, cementing the whispers that a certain Jonathan Anderson may take the top creative spot at the maison.
This week in beauty, things were looking equally unsettled, with family conglomerate Estée Lauder announcing a new organisational structure and executive team, more than doubling job cuts to as many as 7,000 worldwide as part of a cost-saving overhaul. Similarly, Poundland’s Managing Director Austin Cook made a sudden exit, less than two weeks after former boss Barry Williams returned to the discount chain.
In other rather heartening news, nine out of 10 Brits have returned to physical retail according to MRI Software , whose data shows that 88% of the UK population visited a retail destination during October and November 2024.
Also in this roundup, six loved-up beauty launches for Valentine’s Day, a Secret Shopper visits the new Abercrombie & Fitch Co. store in Covent Garden, and Contributing Editor Marcus Jaye explains why brands need to focus less on their Creative Director, and more on their actual brand…
