Reversing the Silent Damage Caused by Neglect in the Workplace

Ignoring employees in the workplace can seem harmless, but you might be shocked to know that it can be more damaging than harassment. This study from the University of British Columbia’s Sauder School of Business (a leading academic institution) finds that being ostracized or excluded leads to greater job dissatisfaction, turnover, and health problems than bullying.?

Feeling a sense of belonging and purpose is a fundamental human need – and historically, the workplace has contributed to fulfilling this need by providing a source of community and shared goals and experiences. This insight sheds light on a crisis facing employers today: a workforce that shows up but feels unseen, unheard and disconnected from their work.?

The modern workplace, especially with the rise of remote and hybrid work, presents more opportunities for employees to feel isolated and even unintentionally ignored. The World Health Organization has declared loneliness a global public health concern. To counteract this, companies must foster environments of care, safety, and community, ensuring every employee feels recognized and connected.

One of the simplest and most consequential things we can do as leaders is take the time to notice our employees.?
