REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY - REACTANCE
REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY - REACTANCE is a technique involving the assertion of a belief or behavior that is opposite to the one desired, with the expectation that this approach will encourage the subject of the persuasion to do what actually is desired.
Psychological reactance is aroused whenever an individual is given a direct order or told that an activity is not possible or not allowed. When pushed, people tend to push back. When told they cannot have something, people tend to want it.
People usually respond to a restrictive force by fighting back against it, resisting attempts at influence. Brehm described psychological reactance as a force aroused by threats to a person's freedom.
ALERT - It's easier said than done
Indeed it’s a great tool but sometimes It doesn’t work, try applying this technique with the individual around you, they will simply comply with what you ask them to do for example -
I have tried this with my kids and told them - ‘Don’t study, don’t exercise, play all-time with devices, as you would prefer not to become anything extraordinary so continue.. and they obey with a great sincerity… it can't get more entertaining than this and we end up with ‘reverse reverse psychology’ in such cases.
In order to make a difference with reverse psychology. we need to find an optimal level of encouragement and challenge to the individual we work with, with zero levels of the authoritarian, with the goal in mind that they raise a level up and improve in whatever they do and exceed expectations.
In my case simply saying - ‘you can’t complete the homework exercise (specific task) in an hour’ with a companionship approach, can charge them as a test to refute me.
