What if … the product / service was already there – it has not been developed with Design Thinking - and you just want to increase its usage?
?I’m happy to share a few insights from an academic project regarding the applicability of Design Thinking for “reverse engineering”:?instead of applying DT to create a new product or service we apply DT to explore how the overall usage of an already existing product can be raised.
It’s about ?the Edu Boxes, an academic OER initiative driven by the Hamburg Open Online University (HOOU). The particular project here refers to the Edu Box dealing with Design Thinking (DT) developed by two engaged professors: Iken Adelheid and Prof. Dr. Kirsten Nazarkiewicz . Their basic goal is to provide? a high-qualitative, practical relevant digital self-learning experience. The Edu Boxes include two more courses - Intercultural Communication & Virtual Intercultural Teams - and are available for free/by self-registration through the https://glocal-campus.org/.?
Methodologically we had started with a creative re-framing of our initial DT-challenge (How might we increase the usage of the Edu Boxes) and a stakeholder mapping. Based on that we conducted some empathy interviews / research - nothing much different compared to a “standard” DT-process. This was the base for the 2-days-workshop we recently met for. ?There again we could leverage some standard DT tools like an Affinity Mapping, Empathy Maps, etc.
The “difference” began with an intense Pains & Gains which let us flow towards shaping the unique selling proposition of the EDU-Boxes. Adding a Jobs-To-Be-Done-analysis (cross reference: VPC) flowed us to condense our focus down from >8 personas to just 3 personas. We consider these remaining personas as ?key multiplicators with the ability to cover most of the other personas. And we fixed that focus with a quick re-framing of our already re-framed HMW-challenge (HMW BRING THE EDU-BOXES TO THE ATTENTION OF HR PEOPLE, LECTURERS& TRAINERS). Therefore the following persona-based ideation-process could be very to the point. ?In the emergent discussion and assessment of the ideas for the three remaining personas - un-previsioned but welcomed and quick! – the ideas converged to just two, manageable solutions which are now ready to be tested.?
I ′m really curious to collect and reflect the results of our testing phase which is scheduled until the end of May.
To summarize the success factors of this “reverse engineering” so far:
1.?????The application of selected standard DT-Tools with the ability to adjust / fine-tune and extend for nuances.
2.?????The extended (see above USP, JTBD) Pains & Gains analysis as it raised our awareness for the USP of the current product as-is with the JTBD-analysis having provided the soil to reduce and focus the target group.
3.?????The team with its diverse expertise and talents that we have formed including backgrounds in ethnology, sociology and economics (Prof. Dr. Kirsten Nazarkiewicz, Iken Adelheid , Julika Baumann Montecinos ), marketing ( Katrin Hahnemann , Marie Seeberger ), visualization & design (Marie Seeberger, Erik Schumb ) , elearning / LMS (Dr. Kai Karin Baum) , project management & DT facilitation (Erik Schumb), Master Student in international business (Hannah Hoffmann)

4.?????Naming a “decision makers” to quickly find a focus in case long discussions need to be shortened ((Prof. Dr. Kirsten Nazarkiewicz, Iken Adelheid)
