?? Reversal curse - Per AI Models, A is B but B is not A.
Dear Colleague, artificial intelligence is capable of many complex tasks today, like flying aircraft, assisting with drug discovery, and even writing complex code, but somehow a big gap remains at its root. ?
Now What Could That Be?
This research has unearthed an unexpected failure in the generalisation in auto-regressive large language models (LLMs).?
Experts found if a model is trained on a sentence of the form “A is B”, it inevitably struggles to figure out that “B is A”.?
This is being aptly called the Reversal Curse.?
Got An Example?
Yup, say a model is trained on “Olaf Scholz was the ninth Chancellor of Germany”, it will not automatically be able to answer the question, “Who was the ninth Chancellor of Germany?”. ??
Also, the probability of a correct answer (“Olaf Scholz” in this case) will not be higher than a random name, including your's. This is the model's basic failure of logical deduction.?
Reverse Reverse-Curse Example??

STATS: Tracking Your Sleep Score
Sleep has emerged as one of the most critical parameters affecting human health and we thought this month's stats blurb should be dedicated to snoozing.?
Well Well, What Do We Have Here?
Sleep tracking tech is in vogue these days, so much so that school kids who sleep like logs and would rather miss their morning buses everyday, are comparing sleep-tracking data from their wearables.
Get Serious, Fellas
Okay, okay, while that is an overkill, here are some sleep stats that you just cannot ignore. (Percentages indicate increase or decrease in sleep score linked to events.)
?? Used separate blankets: Man +20% | Woman +4%
?? Fasted 3 hrs before bed: Man +20% | Woman +24%
And hold your breath....
?? Did not share bed: Man +18% | Woman -6%
Here are two critical takeaways from sleep tracking data a couple logged in over a period of 5 years.
1?? Women sleep far worse (6% lesser sleep) when sleeping alone vs. men.?
2?? Going by a comment, 'sleep for ages and wake up feeling great? 70 sleep score. Sleep for 5 hours and feel like sh**? 70 sleep score. Sleep score is BS'
Take your pick.?
Healthcare: AI For Spinal Surgeries
Just in case you were trying to fathom how much to trust that ADAS in your car, or other life-saving AI applications, the following statement settles it once and for all.?
“Spinal operations are very delicate, complicated surgeries. So we felt like this is a great place to start with applying the technology so that we can make these types of surgeries safer,” Samuel Browd, Proprio’s co-founder and chief medical officer, told Healthcare Brew.?
But Why On Earth?
Alright, so here's the thing about spine surgeries. Before such complex operations, CT scans of the spine are made with patients lying on their backs. However, most procedures are done with the patients lying on their stomachs!?
This means what a surgeon sees on the scan and the real position and workspace of the surgery are inverted. With gravity acting in the other direction in the OT, reality gets a lot more complex.?
AI Solves That?
Pretty much. Proprio’s Paradigm technology blends traditional scans with light imaging and artificial intelligence to render 3D views of the patient’s anatomy during surgery.?

This includes the exact degree of the spine’s curve, meaning precise, efficient surgeries without much left to impromptu improvisations.?
Now, that's some real pain point solving stuff.?
? The tech also does away with additional scans during the surgery and can shave ~30 minutes off the total operation time, per Proprio, which recently raised USD43 million in a Series B to make this tech commercially available.?

BFSI: Indian Insurtech CEO Rings Nasdaq Closing Bell
Sample this message from Nasdaq before we tell you more.?
"Roadzen Inc (Nasdaq: RDZN), a global leader in AI-driven auto insurance, visits the Nasdaq MarketSite in Times Square. In honour of the occasion, Rohan Malhotra, CEO of Roadzen Inc, rings the Closing Bell."?
One word? Super-duper-awesome. (Okay, we cheated on the word count but what the heck.)
More About Roadzen
Roadzen was established in India with a global vision, and the insurtech company is focused on delivering simplified, intelligent, and safer insurance solutions to the automobile industry worldwide.?
The founders see AI as a transformative force in reshaping the $800bn auto insurance market and are road-to-hell bent to establish Roadzen as a leader at the intersection of AI, mobility, and insurance.?
What's The Nasqaq Angle Here?
Recently, Roadzen achieved a significant milestone by securing a pre-money equity value of $683 million.?
Riding on that, the insurtech startup made its debut on Nasdaq on September 21, with its ordinary shares trading on the Nasdaq Global Market under the symbol “RDZN” and its warrants trading on the Nasdaq Capital Market under the symbol “RDZNW”.
?? This warrants a celebration and just in case help is needed there, you could include our insurance transformation leader, Abhishek Nigam, in your gig too.?
Reach out to him for a good time, and if your insurance business needs a technology boost to scale up or solve other workflow related challenges.?

Stuff We Are Watching
?? What's Swarming Over Earth? Don't sweat it out yet because we are a long way from Interstellar or space debris invasion. That's just a visualisation of all Starlink satellites hovering around the globe. As of August 2023, the Starlink Chain consists of 5,000+ mass-produced small satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), which communicate with designated ground transceivers. Nearly 12,000 satellites are planned to be deployed, with a possible later extension to 42,000.
?? We Need Just $1, Thank You: AI chatbots were tasked to run a tech company and, hold that coffee, they built software in under 7 minutes for less than $1. That's not all btw, the research concluded about 86.66% of the generated software systems were "executed flawlessly." Le Coders -
?? Social Media Inspires And How: We have all been moved by social media at some point in life, but these women in Japan are pushing that inspiration to the penthouse. After the pandemic totalled their dreams and careers, women inspired by social media stories have taken to rickshaw pulling on the streets of Tokyo.?
While we dug deep into the artificial intelligence reverse curse, we found that around the world, millions of so-called “clickworkers” help train AI models, teaching machines the difference between humans and light poles, or what combination of words describe violence or sexual abuse.?
Most such workers are stationed in the global south, where wages are cheap.
But, to chase cheap to the ends of the earth, Metroc from Finland has turned to prison labor. The company gets low-cost, Finnish-speaking workers, while the prison system can offer inmates employment that readies them for the digital world of work after their release.?
Using prisoners to train AI does ring up old, timeless tales of low-paid and sometimes exploitive labor that has often existed downstream in technology. But in Finland, the project has received widespread support, per this report.?
We are going to need a long weekend to process that. ??
