Revealed: Top 10 investors at Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange
Ten individuals have wealth valued at over Sh208 billion in companies listed on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE), company reports indicate.
A campaign is ongoing to attract more retail investors
The analysis is based on the public-issued annual reports
The value of their investment was also calculated based on the total market capitalization
These ten individuals as of Friday last week had a collective Sh208.2 billion investment at the bourse, equivalent to 1.37 percent of the Sh15.12 trillion total market capitalization.
Patrick Schegg (Sh55.94 billion)
According to several online publications, Mr Schegg is an experienced fund manager
NMB Bank Plc's annual report for the year 2022 revealed that Mr Schegg has a 1.8 percent stake at the company equivalent to 9,000,390 shares.
With the NMB’s total market capitalization of Sh1.73 trillion by Friday last week, the value of Mr Schegg's investment in NMB is approximately Sh31.14 billion.
The investor also owns 50,754,057 shares, or 2 percent of CRDB Bank Plc.
The lender equities capital at the bourse is currently at Sh1.24 trillion, making his investments valued at nearly Sh24.8 billion.
Aunali Rajabali (Sh53.8 billion)
He is a chairman and shareholder of Megapipes Solutions Ltd in Kenya and Chairman and shareholder of Plasco Ltd in Tanzania, companies that deal with water sanitation and storage solutions.
He owns 3.11 percent of the NMB Bank Plc or 15,533,731 shares.
Based on the current equity capital, his investments is valued at an estimated Sh53.8 billion.
Sajjad Rajabali (Sh53.8 billion)
He is a Shareholder and non-executive director of Megapipes Solutions Ltd in Kenya and a Shareholder and Director of Plasco Ltd in Tanzania.
He owns 3.11 percent of NMB Bank Plc or 15,534,030 shares also estimated investment of nearly Sh53.8 billion.
Hans Macha (Sh16.12 billion)
He is a local businessman who according to the CRDB Bank Plc’s 2022 annual report owns 32,764,200 shares or 1.3 percent.
At the current equities capital level, the value of Macha's investment in CRDB is approximately Sh16.12 billion.
Sayeed Kadri and family (Sh8.36 billion)
He and other four members of the Kadri family (/Basharat Kadro/Mehboob Kadri/ Khalid/Muzammil Kadri) own 0.59 of Tanzania Portland Cement Company Limited alias ‘Twiga Cement’, according to its 2021 annual report.
The company has total equity capital of Sh741.28 billion, thus the value of their investment in Twiga Cement is approximately Sh4.37 billion.
Swissport Tanzania’s 2021 annual report also showed that Mr Sayeed Kadri and or Basharati Kadri own one percent of the firm.

Considering the market capitalization of Sh59.04 billion, Kadri's investment in Swissport is approximately Sh590.4 million.
He and his family also own 0.2 percent of the Tanzania Cigarette Company (TCC) per the 2022 annual report, with a market capitalization of Sh1.7 trillion, Kadris’ investment in TCC is approximately Sh3.4 billion.
Murtaza Nasser (Sh6.67 billion)
Mr Nasser owns 0.9 percent of the Tanzania Portland Cement Company Limited alias ‘Twiga Cement’, according to its 2021 annual report.
The company has total equity capital of Sh741.28 billion
Therefore, the value of Mr. Murtaza Nasser's investment in Twiga Cement is approximately Sh6.671 billion.
Ernest Massawe (Sh5.65 billion)
He owns 15.86 percent of the manufacturer and distributor of industrial and medical gases in Tanzania, TOL Gases Limited (TOL) by the end of 2022, according to the company report. With the firm’s market capitalization of Sh35.65 billion, His investments in TOL Gases are approximately Sh5.65 billion.
Said Bakhresa (Sh3.78 billion)
The local tycoon owns 0.51 percent of Twiga cement according to its 2021 annual report.
Given that the market capitalization of Twiga Cement is Sh741.28 billion, Bakhresa's investment in Twiga Cement is approximately Sh3.78 billion.
Arnold Kilewo (Sh2.53 billion)
According to the TOL Gases’ annual report of 2022, he owns 3, 264, 144 shares equivalent to 5.68 percent.
That is approximately Sh2.122 billion.
He is also on the board of directors
Harold Temu (Sh1.55 billion)
He owns 2,507,740 shares at TOL equivalent to 4.36 percent according to the 2022 annual report.
With a market capitalization of Sh35.65 billion, the value of Mr Temu's investment in TOL is approximately Sh1.55 billion.
