Returning to Work After a Break

I have noted the following steps to guide my return to formal employment in Kenya with confidence and determination:
Dos:
1. Identify transferable skills: I will recognize the skills from my past experiences that apply to my desired roles, showcasing these skills on my resume and during interviews to highlight my value.
2. Update Resume and LinkedIn Profile: I will ensure my resume and LinkedIn profile are up-to-date and tailored for each job application, highlighting my relevant experiences and achievements to attract potential employers.
3. Network effectively: I will reach out to former colleagues, friends, and industry contacts to inform them of my job search. I will actively attend networking events and join professional groups to expand my connections and discover opportunities.
4. Consider Skill-Based Volunteer Work: I will volunteer my skills to gain experience, build my network, and stay engaged in my field, looking for opportunities aligned with my career goals and interests.
5. Invest in Online Learning: I will take advantage of free or affordable online courses to enhance my skills and stay competitive in the job market. Platforms like Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, and Udemy offer a wide range of courses that I will explore.
6. Explore Part-Time or Freelance Opportunities: I will consider part-time or freelance work to generate income while transitioning back into formal employment, exploring websites like Upwork and Freelancer.com to connect with clients seeking my expertise.
7. Budget and Plan Finances: I will develop a budget to manage my finances during the transition period, prioritizing essential expenses and minimizing non-essential spending to alleviate financial strain.

8. Stay Positive and Persistent: I will maintain a positive attitude and persevere through the job search process, celebrating small victories, staying motivated, and remaining focused on my long-term career goals.
9. I will identify a coach or mentor who has successfully pursued the path I want to take and sign up for their coaching services.
Don'ts:
1. Rely solely on old skills: I will not limit myself to my previous skills. I am open to learning new skills and adapting to changes in the job market.
2. Neglect Networking: I will not underestimate the power of networking, staying connected with industry professionals, and actively seeking out opportunities to expand my network.
3. Overlook Online Learning: I will not ignore the opportunities for skill development offered by online courses, investing in continuous learning to enhance my employability and career prospects.
4. Dismiss Part-Time or Freelance Work: I will not overlook part-time or freelance opportunities as temporary solutions, recognizing that these roles can provide valuable experience and income while I search for full-time employment.
5. Ignore Financial Planning: I will not overlook the importance of budgeting and financial planning during my job search; managing my finances effectively will reduce stress and uncertainty during the transition.
6. Lose Sight of My Goals: I will not lose sight of my long-term career goals amidst the challenges of job hunting, staying focused and persistent, and knowing that every step forward brings me closer to my objectives.
