Returning to the office is hard, here is what can help

Returning to the office is hard, here is what can help

?? I have been quite quiet for a number of reasons: (1) the pandemic wall feels so heavy to take off, (2) Villo, our sister company is pivoting hard into building a care infrastructure for your home and life that makes it ridiculously easy to work in or out of the home.

?? Employees are unhappy with the new wave of return-to-office mandates. Apple announced that from September, its employees should return to working from its offices, the impressive Apple Park in Cupertino, California, and will only be able to work from home two days a week for a maximum of two weeks a year, with management approval. This makes us wonder if this is truly a flexible work policy or Apple is simply putting up a show. Staff members say they want a flexible approach where those who want to work remote can do so.

?? As a working mother, and the Founder of a platform that supports thousands of women at home and in the workplace, I have been fortunate to watch the evolution of working from home during the pandemic. From the endless Zoom meetings, to the crying babies in the background, to taking calls in the bathrooms, and ordering tissue paper during lunch breaks - I have seen it all and experienced a few of these scenarios myself. I think its best to understand the nuances of working from home and from the office, and figure out what works best for you and your organization. At the end of the day, we will need to meet in the middle to make this work for everyone.

?? This issue is a resource and a guide to start thinking about the return to the office. And if you are already back to office, then you will be armed with support for how to manage home, work, and life in the "new normal."

Finally, I want to thank you for sticking with me. It has been a hectic year for me and my family as we figure out a cross-continental lifestyle, quitting careers, setting up businesses, raising babies, and growing a family. I appreciate you so so much.

?????♀? Let's dive in.

?? YOUR RETURN TO THE OFFICE GUIDE

??????? How is returning to the office supposed to work exactly? If you have found yourself questioning your need to return to the office, wondering if your employer can actually force you to come back to office, or if you have entertained the choice of refusing to come back to the office, then this advice column is for you.

?? Still dreaming of working in your sweatpants? Working In Sweatpants May Be Over As Companies Contemplate The Great Office ReturnThe plan is for those people to return this summer, followed by more in the fall. But a return to the numbers of people in the office before the pandemic? Maybe never. "The pandemic has really had us rethink what it means to get work done, and how we get the work done."

???? How do you prepare for a million workers to return to the office? Ask the government. The nation's largest employer, the federal government, is beginning to plan for bringing many of its workers back into their offices, now that the coronavirus pandemic seems to be winding down in America. Already, employees of the White House have been told to come back, or in many cases come to the office for the first time, next month. The Biden administration has also told other federal agencies to submit final plans for what it calls "the safe reentry of employees to the physical workplace" by July 19.

?? Millions of employees who can work from home don't seem interested in returning to the office anytime soon, even as social distancing guidelines are relaxed. But that hesitation doesn't take into account the many potential upsides of going back into the office. Here are just a few examples of why we should look forward to resuming in-person work.

?? Job openings rise to new record high in April as US labor shortage slows hiring. Here is the real kicker, separations, which include layoffs and quits, jumped by 324,000 to 5.8 million.

??????????? Should you move if your job is staying remote? If you are now working from home for the foreseeable future as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, you might be starting to notice things about your home, and neighborhood, that weren’t evident when you spent much of your time at the office. Perhaps you have a neighbor with a dog who won’t stop barking when packages are delivered (that neighbor is me). Another neighbor might have decided to do extensive work on their apartment, or roof (the home above me, and the house next door). Or you might be facing the prospect of many more months of lockdown with your family in a space that is not ideal for 24-hour living (again, me). So, is now a good time to start looking for greener pastures?

OUR PREDICTION FOR THE FUTURE OF WORK

by Blessing Adesiyan | Founder & CEO, Mother Honestly

?? Companies who decide to allow remote or hybrid work will win in the long run. The others will struggle for optimal talent and their productivity and profitability will suffer.

?? Presenteeism will morph into remoteeism if companies continue to demand too much from remote workers without emphasizing the need for rest and restoration.

?? All companies support working families on the Homefront to boost loyalty, productivity, and improve employee's well-being and engagement.

?? More manager will be retrained to manage remote and hybrid teams while efforts to train employees to manage time and prioritize task / projects will intensify.

?? Working mothers will resign in the summer months due to lack of support and infrastructure as the call for return-to-office intensifies.

???? Expect even more employee activism and organizing in the coming months as employees demand accountability, flexibility, and family-friendly policies.

?? A high percentage of working dads will choose flexible work arrangements over a 5-day work week this summer.

?? Employee benefit companies will see a rise in the request for care services as employers continue to seek ways to support families in the post-pandemic world.

You’re not alone. States across the country are reporting that rates of unemployment are skyrocketing, and it’s a trend that doesn’t seem likely to let up soon enough for most folks’ comfort.

??????? Figs becomes the first company to go public led by two female cofounders. Hasson, 39, and Spear, 37, founded FIGS in 2013 aiming to disrupt the $12 billion U.S. medical apparel market. The cofounders and co-CEOs observed a problem in the field: the responsibility for purchasing uniforms for health care workers—from home health aides to dental hygienists to physicians—had largely shifted from the institution to the individual, with 85% of employees buying their own scrubs. But scrubs were still sold at physical retailers, often, the cofounders say, in a "strip mall far from the hospital."

Whatever is currently stopping you from having seven figures in the bank—whether it is doubt, feeling overwhelmed, imposter syndrome, trying too many things, or simply not knowing where to begin—this book shows you how to clear every obstacle in your way.

We Should All Be Millionaires will forever change the way you think about money and your ability to earn it.

In this book, Rachel Rodgers—mother of four, attorney, business owner, and self-made Black millionaire— shares the lessons she’s learned both in her own journey to wealth and in coaching hundreds of women through their own journeys to seven figures.

Your information on the "big resignation ahead" really got me. My husband has been working from home since March 2020 and he dreads returning to the office. He has loved being home with me and the kids and having all the extra time he lost with commuting. We've been having some game planning to help him find something that will be a better work-life balance.
