SETI AIR Newsletter - October 2024
Conversations about AI and machine learning continue to permeate society, be it ChatGPT4, text-to-video generators such as Sora, or discussions surrounding fake news and copyright. AI is a phenomenal tool, but it also comes with opportunities and concerns that should be addressed. That is why we launched the Algorithmic Imaginings residency, which invites artists working at the intersection of art and technology to explore new avenues of thinking about AI and connect them to the research taking place at the SETI Institute.
Celebrating 40 Years of Cosmic Exploration
Join us for a night of interstellar adventure as we commemorate four decades of groundbreaking research and discoveries in science and space exploration. This special anniversary event will feature renowned scientists, interactive exhibits, and a captivating atmosphere. Don't miss your chance to be part of this historic celebration!
SETI Institute and Classical Archives Newsletter - October 29, 2024
Pierre R. Schwob, long-time member of the SETI Institute’s Board of Directors, came recently to the SETI Institute for a packed reading/signing event for his new novel “AWE: A Technothriller.” Already an Amazon Bestseller, it has received terrific editorial and reader reviews. Perhaps in a first, Schwob dedicated his book to the L factor of the Drake equation. It tells the story of brilliant scientists who leverage AI to combat climate change, virulent disinformation, and a murderous adversary who will stop at nothing to protect his and his allies’ interests. Most saliently, the story focuses on the need for scientific rigor and the benefits of international collaborations when confronting global challenges.
SETI Live Replay: The Hera Mission: Following Up on the DART Impact of Dimorphos
In September 2022, a small spacecraft called DART hit the surface of a tiny asteroid moonlet called Dimorphos. That spacecraft was the first test of a planetary defense system, attempting to change an asteroid's orbit in the hope of being able to do so under a real near-Earth threat. The test succeeded, shortening the moonlet's orbit by 32 minutes. Now, a follow-up mission called Hera is on its way to the system, complete with an orbiter and a lander. The European Space Agency plans to observe the impact site and measure any changes to the shape and any craters left behind.
Big Picture Science: How Hot is Too Hot?
Extreme heat is taking its toll on the natural world. We use words like “heat domes” and “freakish” to describe our everyday existence. These high temperatures aren’t only uncomfortable - they are lethal to humans, animals, and crops. In search of an answer to our episode’s question, we discuss the dilemma of an ever-hotter world with an author who has covered climate change for more than two decades.
