Return to Office Mandate

Distinguished University Professor at USF; Director USF Occupational Health Psychology
In light of the “Return to In-Person Work” (https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/return-to-in-person-work/) order issued January 20, 2025, I’m sharing several no paywall resources that synthesize the remote/hybrid/telecommuting literature and offer recommendations for organizations.

?
1. How Effective Is Telecommuting? Assessing the Status of Our Scientific Findings
?
Our conclusion at that time was, "The research overall suggests that telecommuting may be most beneficial in terms of organizational outcomes when it is practiced to a moderate degree. That is, a balance of face-to-face and virtual contact may be optimal." The conclusion that hybrid work is associated with beneficial work outcomes continues to hold true.

2. Remote work: Post-COVID-19 state of the knowledge and best practice recommendations
?
In this White Paper we reviewed the latest literature and took a deep dive into the relationship between remote/hybrid work and job performance. Overall conclusions based on experimental/quasi-experimental studies is that there is no consistent between-person evidence that those who work remotely perform more poorly than do those who do not work remotely.?
Check out both resources for best practice suggestions.
