Return on Luck, a key for lifetime success
Winter weekends in our city this year are more enjoyable thanks to warmer weather. While I was taking a coffee on the terrace of a bar, I saw both opened and closed restaurants around the place. The owner of the bar told me he had to pivot the business, and now home deliveries at dinner time had become the main moneymaker activity for him. Frenzy evenings from Friday to Sunday with orders arriving through the app, by phone and via email.
Restaurant owners have been unlucky in those countries whose governments decided to prohibit inside dining as a way to curve COVID. Not all restaurant owners reacted to the COVID measures in the same way: some closed down their activity and others succeeded to pivot their business to make more money through the booming business of home delivery.
Luck works sometimes in asymmetric ways. A new school was built close to one of the bars in my neighborhood. This was a lucky event for the bar. But again, the return you get from luck also depends on what you make of it. This restaurant decided:
- To sell sandwiches in the morning so that parents who forgot to prepare them for their kids could buy them at the last minute
- Different dishes for lunch by midday so that 12th graders can go there, as they are allowed to have lunch outside of school
- Snacks and drinks for the afternoon, when parents are waiting for their kids to end the extra-curricular sports activities
By doing that, their return on “luck” could not have been bigger!
Both in times of economic peace and in times of economic war, the formula is the same: prosperity and performance depend on your RETURN on LUCK! How much you get out of unlucky or lucky events. It’s a question of mindset and your capacity to take calculated risks.
This mindset is what I asked this year to my BIC OneTeam Europe, and this has been eventually part of our success.
Life reminded me again that you can learn things everywhere, even while taking a coffee in a bar on a sunny Sunday morning.
