Retrospective or Prospective Or Both?

Since we are in COVID, have been reading a lot on medical sciences, diseases, epidemics & pandemic for last few days. While doing came across 2 very interesting terms in medical sciences Retrospective & Prospective. Agile professional are already aware of what Retrospective is, however I am not sure if any of us have used PROSPECTIVE in our Ways of Working?

What is a Retrospective & Prospective in the medicine world?

  • Retrospective (Historical): The researcher looks at historical data for a group. Some of the people in this group have developed the disease, and some have not. This can result in finding out who has the disease and when they developed it. (Source: https://www.statisticshowto.com/cohort-study/)
  • Prospective: None of the subjects have the disease (or other outcome) being measured when the study commences; data analysis happens after a period of time has elapsed. It is assumed that some subjects will in reality get this disease, though they do not have it today. This is predictive in nature.

In Agile Way of Working retrospectives are extensively used as a tool to identify "What happened in the past few days", "What Went Well", What did not go well" and how these past events or actions can serve as a learning aid / input to improve the future. We do these through Action Items, which are tracked to closure. Like in medical field, we look at the historical data of our team, identify anti patterns, and try to either eliminate them or reduce them.

What about PROSPECTIVE event? Should we also be conducting a PROSPECTIVE event for our Agile teams and if so how? Without looking into past, can we have a model for predicting what could be the patterns our team would be developing in future. This obviously would help us in redefining and aligning our coaching strategy in a better way.

Further study required to investigate.

An interesting thought Ashutosh. Can we look at what worked and did not for similar projects in the past and identify opportunities for improvement for current projects in advance ?

We run something called a Futurespective which is a forward-looking exercise. Also, activities like Hopes and concerns, anchors and engines also help look at things Preemptively. I generally run forward-looking exercises with teams in retrospectives on an alternating basis which helps a lot.
