Is Retrofitting Your Facility for Hydrogen Testing Safe and Economical?

A lot of companies are exploring getting into hydrogen fuel cell or hydrogen combustible engine production. A key consideration is always:

“Can I retrofit a current test facility for hydrogen testing?”

We help you answer that question in our latest blog post. Of course, the answer depends on a variety of factors. Safety is chief among them, so we touch on that as well as some other logistical and business factors that impact the cost of retrofitting a specific test space.

Then there’s the question of whether the cost of retrofit would exceed the cost of new construction. A lot of it comes down to the similarities – or lack thereof – between what the site was originally designed to test and the hydrogen testing you’ll want to have done there. For example, if you want to convert a gas or diesel ICE test cell to a hydrogen combustion test, you should feel optimistic about the feasibility of a retrofit.

In any case, you’ll still want to go through the steps and calculations to determine what’s the best option for you: Retrofit or new build?

Ask The Expert

Q: Can we use existing infrastructure for delivering and testing hydrogen safely in fuel cell testing applications, or are specific materials required?

A:?Probably not. The chemical and physical properties of hydrogen require use of specialized materials rated for compatibility with hydrogen. For example, the tubing will have to be stainless steel, but not all stainless steel is rated for use with hydrogen. You’ll need high-quality stainless steel, such as those meeting standards like ASTM A269 or ISO 15500, which have the durability needed for hydrogen exposure and the ability to handle the high-pressure demands of hydrogen delivery safely.

For example, we use tubing specifically designated as oxygen-clean, rather than traditional tubing, to ensure safety and purity in the system.

End of Line Gen-Set Production Testing

Our client sought to enhance the efficiency of their end-of-line production test system for generator-sets utilizing alternative fuels such as propane and natural gas. To achieve this, they aimed to fully automate the process. The system includes seven independent test enclosures with integrated controls and data acquisition systems, an automated delivery conveyor system, and a centralized prep area.
