" Re/Touched by an Angel "

“Don’t worry about the makeup or hair, it’s not a beauty shot, " I was told on the set of a photo shoot.

OK, let me backtrack. The conversation started when I mentioned that I could see that the lipstick was a little smudged over the lips on a model. " Insert said response here. " Sometime later when I ran into that make-up artist, she mentioned that she should have been a little more attentive to the particulars. More recently on the set of another shoot, some of us were going through magazine ads and abundant misconfigurations ran rampant. As we picked up the pages of our favorite glossies, nips & tucks were not uncommon.

" Can we do a slimmer leg here? " It 's great, but the model’s got the wrong pose, can we insert a prosthesis there? " " The clothes are a little wrinkled, can we flatten them out ?" " I really love the model we chose, but can we elongate her torso and thin out her cheeks? "

Is this what all the talk of diversity in fashion ultimately means? Who cares? Does the average consumer even notice? Is this another version of ?

“ Astonish me “ is what the late art director Alexey Brodovicth he used to tell photographers he commissioned. I’m not quite sure he meant it in the way we are being astonished now. However, anyone would agree that some art directors can whip up wonders regarding page format, layout, and composition after receiving brilliant photos.

" is he related to Erin Brockovich? " " Irving Penn, is that close to Irving Plaza? " " Deborah Turbeville, Who’s that?

What is a good photograph? How much work goes into producing such photos. Who has produced good photographs over the years? With clients hovering over multiple computer monitors on set, do they know a good photograph when they see one? Are the good old days of photography are gone?

I for one can't help but ask these questions when I see so many over worked images. I ponder what it all means and what's to come. In these tumultuous times, so many people in the world are looking for relief from the heavens. In the fashion industry, we can say we’ve had the privilege of being retouched by the angels.

Was thinking about you today when I a friend received a call from a Divya. My partner works for the company that owns Sequoia Grove wines and distributes Cake Bread, maybe we'll come out and take a winery tour. That's in your neck of the woods, no?
