For The Retiree…

As you head towards the age where it is time to retire and enjoy the rest of your life and your hard earned money – the main question that lingers is, “where do I retire?”

Bali is definitely one of the most popular answers to that very important question.

Why Bali? Due to Bali’s unique Culture, it’s famous forms of art and dance and of course it is a paradise when it comes to islands, why not Bali?

Majority of the locals can speak English, which means there really isn’t a language barrier. Finding affordable accommodation is easy or if you choose to buy, it definitely would be a great investment for you and for your children.

You are surrounded by massage parlors, which means nurturing yourself is made easy. Being treated to beautiful sunrises and sunsets is all part of the package when retiring in Bali and long strolls on the beach, taking in all its beauty can only be nourishing for the soul.

The next questions to follow is how easy is it to retire in Bali and what steps need to be taken?

  • “The required age to retire in Bali is 55years of age.
  • Have to have proof of health and life insurance.
  • Proof of pension:

- Minimum of roughly $1520 a month OR

- Lump sum of money roughly $18270.00 to provide living expenses while in Bali.

  • Proof of rental agreement with the cost set out at over $380.00 per month.
  • A letter stating you agree to employ at least one Indonesian while living in Bali. Eg. Helper, Gardner, Driver etc.
  • A CV and an agreement stating you will not work while in Bali.
  • By acquiring this Visa, you will be able to stay in Bali for one year and renew for 5 more years.
  • You will also be able to open a local bank account and get a local drivers license.
  • Once you have lived in Bali for 5years or more, you can apply for official and permanent residency.” (Bali Living)

Next to know, now that you have read how easy it is to retire here in Bali, is where and what area should you retire in?

This is a little challenging to answer as every area has its specialty, or its ‘thing’ it’s known for. This also comes down to you and what interests you and what you would like to be surrounded by. Seminyak, Amed, Uluwatu, Ubud, Sanur, Canggu, Lovina just to name a few are all highly recommend and have something special to offer.

Amed, being the hub and main place to retire in if you have any diving interests and experience. Scuba diving is available for all levels of experience, there are plenty scuba schools willing to instruct if you have never done it before or if you are a little more on the experienced side, there are boats waiting to take you out. Fishing is also an option, should this be a sport you enjoy.

Amed has also stayed true to its Balinese culture. It hasn’t been ‘Westernized’ just as yet. So if you are looking to embrace the Balinese culture and enjoy the quietness and tranquility of Bali, this may just be your spot.

Sanur, being one of the 1st towns discovered in Bali, is such a laid back town, often referred to as ‘Snore City’. Sanur is never on the clock, everyone will get to their tasks at hand in their own time. Much to the nature of its people, is the surrounding calm oceans which meets the sandy white beaches.

Sanur has some of the most beautiful beaches, filled with fishing boats as the locals are bringing in the catch of the day or taking expats out for a day on the boat.

It is also a great beach for Snorkeling and long strolls either early morning, or late afternoon as you catch the sun kissing the ocean good night before heading out for a early dinner or even maybe even the locals popular beer here in Bali known as Bingtang.

Ubud, the area which sums up spirituality, arts and dance in a place. Ubud is the heart of Bali when it comes to arts and culture. Whether it is art displayed through carving wood and making furniture or beautiful paintings – they really embrace their creativity. In this peaceful place, as there is not a lot to do, it gives you time to reflect and become in touch with your spirituality. Whether it’s yoga retreats or classes or maybe even balancing your chakras, this is the place to be for soul searching.

You are also certain to find affordable property with a magnificent view of the breath taking rice paddies. Who wouldn’t want to wake up as a retired individual to that view which can only be food for the soul.

Uluwatu… surfers paradise. Just because you are retiring, doesn’t mean you have to give up surfing too. As you head more towards the south of Bali, up into the cliffs, you will find Uluwatu. Uluwatu is filled with lots of restaurants and adventurous paths which lead you to the beach. Definitely an area to consider.

Seminyak, well Seminyak is the busiest and most popular area in Bali. It is all about the shopping, the food and of course the night life. This area is “vibing” all the time. It is pretty central to everything, and everything you need is easily accessible. So if you looking for more of the social area, this is the area for you.

Don’t get me wrong, the area might be busy, but the properties tucked away down the small gangs are gems! It might be all busy out there, but your villa won’t hear a thing!
