Retired Judge Kawooya Samuel Kigongo Announces Presidential Candidacy for 2026 Elections.
As the race for the presidency heats up ahead of the 2026 general elections, retired lawyer and judge Kawooya Samuel Kigongo has officially announced his candidacy. During a media address, Kigongo emphasized his commitment to promoting democracy and instigating meaningful change in Uganda, critiquing the long tenure of current president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who has led the country for many years.
With just a year remaining until the elections, several individuals have declared their interest in the presidency, but Kigongo stands out as the only candidate challenging Museveni from within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, where Museveni serves as chairman.
Kigongo expressed confidence in his decision to enter the race, asserting that his approach would differ significantly from previous candidates who have faced Museveni in past elections, particularly in 2015. He remains prepared to confront the obstacles that may arise during his campaign.
In response to recent comments made by Army Chief Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba regarding the leadership role of non-military citizens, Kigongo refuted these assertions, arguing that the constitution does not support such views.
Kigongo is now awaiting the NRM elections and the approval of fellow party members to determine if he will stand as the party's flag bearer for the presidency in the upcoming 2026 elections.
