The UK (and much of the world) has encountered tax pain and increased national debt as the economy re-sets. All the more reason to re-set our own plans and put ourself first and maybe even retire 5 years earlier! I want to help you understand where you are now, where you want to get to and how?you?can achieve?a better retirement.

The longer you have until retirement, the more you can do to improve your prospects, as so much flows from increasing your knowledge around pensions, investments and how they interlink with tax. This throws up an immediate challenge as the UK has one of the?most complex tax regimes in the world. In the book I set out very clear views on what you may expect and what you can do about it and it is fully updated for the 2023/24 tax year.

There are then hundreds of opportunities to improve your retirement by saving more and earning that little bit better. But all that clever financial stuff ignores the more important goal of creating the life you seek from a great home, focusing on your health and personal relationships and enjoying hobbies, new interests and maybe volunteering (and giving something back to society). Again the book is packed with hints, tips and signposts.

Finally, I have presented retirement seminars for 20 years where I got the sense that many people were approaching a?‘cliff-edge’?retirement. Suddenly they were on a course and maybe retirement came 6 months later - that’s a cliff edge! Suddenly people were realising that there was so much more they could have been doing to plan and achieve a better retirement. On the other hand I’ve worked with many personal tax clients and tried to encourage the concept of a?glide-path?into retirement from about 10 years or more before retirement. That gives you a better chance to create the lifestyle you want. Just a thought!
