In a recent statement, Infosys founder Narayana Murthy ignited a discourse on working hours, advocating for a 70-hour workweek to propel economic sustainability, drawing parallels with post-World War II practices in Japan and Germany.
Reflecting on history, the 1911 Factory Act initially set working hours at 12 per day with one weekly off. Evolving through ILO recommendations, the 1948 Factories Act established a 48-hour workweek, a standard still adhered to today. Despite India holding the longest working hours among the top 10 economies, the proposed Labour code suggests a flexible 12 hours per day for a 4-day workweek, while maintaining a weekly cap of 48 hours.
This call for longer working hours clashes with a rising concern for mental and physical health, particularly linked to heart disease. Figures like Elon Musk, known for endorsing 80-plus hour workweeks, align with Murthy's stance, echoing a sentiment shared by several CEOs and CXOs.
However, a counter-movement within leadership seeks to shift the emphasis from hours spent to outcomes achieved. Studies reveal that millennials and Generation Z prioritize flexibility over rigid working hours, challenging the traditional notions of work.
Amidst diverse opinions on working hours, the focal point should be what best suits the organization, its business goals, and its people. It is imperative to move beyond a fixed notion of work hours and direct attention towards efficiency and productivity.
As the workforce becomes increasingly intelligent, with future generations expected to be 10 times smarter, the focus should shift to creating a work environment where employees are engaged, accountable, and empowered. The culture and work practices of an organization cannot be simply copied; instead, decisions should align with the organization's values, culture, and vision.

The concept of work-life balance, once considered sacrosanct, no longer fits the current landscape. Work and life are inseparable, necessitating a search for ways to integrate and balance both aspects. Organizations must recognize that the dichotomy between work and personal life is unrealistic and should encourage a harmonious coexistence.
Essential elements such as having supportive reporting managers, fostering agile workspaces, maintaining a skilled workforce, and embracing a learning organization contribute to higher efficiency, naturally fostering a well-balanced work-life equation.
In conclusion, while individuals are encouraged to listen to various perspectives and do what is right for them, the underlying principle remains the importance of balance. The harmony between the people and the organization is crucial, as the success behind a product and the well-being of those creating it are intertwined and mutually complementary.
Word of Caution: Remember, while CEOs and CXOs advocate for longer or shorter working hours, none may step forward when discontent arises among your workforce. Simultaneously, employees must acknowledge the significance of organizational health. The same CEOs and CXOs who emphasize work practices are unlikely to offer employment if the balance falters. Striking equilibrium is not just a choice but a necessity for the mutual prosperity of both the organization and its employees.
