Rethinking Willpower: The Surprising Truth

Rethinking Willpower: The Surprising Truth

When my 12-year old Lilly was 5, she was obsessed with Reeses Cups. ?

And with good reasons; Reeses Cups are one of God's miracles??

One day we were at Granny and PawPaw’s, which is the equivalent of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

Lilly kept coming into the room I was in and asking, “Daddy, can I have this Reeses Cup?”

“No babe, we are about to go home and eat dinner.”

She left.

2 minutes later…

“Daddy, can I have this Reeses Cup?”

“No Lilly! We are about to go home and eat dinner.”

This happened several more times. ?It was like the movie Groundhog Day, but not like Billy Murray funny.

Finally, I had it!

I grabbed all three kiddos and we left.

On the way out, I noticed there were A LOT of candy wrappers in PawPaw’s office.??

I gathered all my kids and asked how this happened.

Lane and Ava immediately started to cry and plead their innocence.

Not Lilly.

I looked at her and asked, “did you eat all of those Reeses Cups?"

She replied with the stone cold confidence of a prisoner that knows they are never getting out.

And she gave me an answer I'll never forget??

I think you know where this story is going...

Take a few minutes and listen/watch for:

  • Simplify routines and remove friction to conserve willpower for critical tasks.
  • Use strategic friction to deter undesirable habits and make desirable ones easier.
  • Create systems and habits that support your goals, reducing reliance on willpower.

Oh, and of course to find out what happened to my cherub faced, chocolate criminal:)

Loved that line, “She replied with the stone cold confidence of a prisoner that knows they are never getting out.”
