Rethinking Overweight and Obesity: Unveiling the Truth About Weight Loss

As a dietitian, even I was once overwhelmed by the plethora of messages about weight loss.?However, years of specialized training and assisting countless clients have equipped me with valuable insights into effective weight loss strategies.

The Weight Crisis

In 1980, around two out of every five Australian adults were overweight or obese. Today, it's a staggering two out of every three. Childhood obesity has also seen a dramatic rise, with one in four kids falling into this category. The body mass index (BMI) is often used to assess overweight and obesity, although it has its limitations, especially on an individual level. Overweight is typically defined as a BMI of 25 to 30, while obesity is indicated by a BMI exceeding 30. However, beyond these numbers, there are various factors influencing one's weight.

Is Obesity a Choice?

A critical question arises: Is obesity simply a matter of choosing to eat less and move more? The reality is far more intricate. Nearly 70% of our weight is predetermined by various factors before we even reach the age of two. These factors include generational dietary patterns, exposure to chemicals, conditions during pregnancy, and early life experiences. These early influences set the stage for our future weight and can pose challenges in maintaining a healthy weight later in life.

Our daily choices certainly matter, but they constitute only about 5% of the weight equation. The broader influence comes from our lifestyle and environment, encompassing societal norms, food accessibility, biological predispositions, and more. Understanding these dynamics is crucial when striving for lasting weight loss.

The Biological Battle

To comprehend the current weight dilemma, it's essential to look back in time. For the majority of human existence spanning 200,000 to 300,000 years, weight issues were virtually nonexistent. Weight problems at a population level, emerged only about a century ago, representing a mere 0.03% of our time on Earth as modern humans. Our biology is wired to store fat as a survival mechanism, which makes shedding excess weight a challenging feat.

When we attempt to lose body fat, our body resists, triggering hunger, cravings, and a slowdown in metabolism. Our brain's reward centres are stimulated by calorie-dense foods prevalent in our obesogenic society. Willpower alone is insufficient in battling these biological responses. People have diverse eating behaviours due to varying underlying physiologies, making it even more challenging to combat obesity.

Treating Obesity: A New Perspective

The language around obesity is evolving, and it's essential to treat it as a disease rather than stigmatizing individuals. Just as we don't refer to someone with cancer as "the cancer man," we should approach obesity in a compassionate and solution-oriented manner. Treating obesity necessitates utilizing a comprehensive set of tools, including dietary interventions, exercise, pharmacological support, and in some cases, surgical interventions. However, education and a systematic approach are fundamental for success.

The Path Forward: A Systematic Approach

Achieving and maintaining weight loss requires a systematic approach, built on education, nutrition skills, motivation, healthy habits, supportive environments, and accountability. The National Weight Control Registry's insights, gleaned from successful weight loss stories, emphasize the importance of understanding complex food systems, developing nutrition skills, and cultivating motivation. Healthy habits and a supportive environment, along with regular monitoring and goal setting, are crucial elements in the weight loss journey.
