Rethinking Leadership: What it Means to Accounting Professionals

Rethinking Leadership: What it Means to Accounting Professionals

In accounting, we routinely talk about leadership and leading through change. As the accounting profession has undergone considerable transformation lately, many of us have altered our leadership styles. I recently asked leaders to weigh in on the following questions, “What does leadership mean to you? Have you recently adapted your leadership style?” Their responses were both thoughtful and empowering. I’m sure you will feel the same. Several leaders also attended the NJCPA’s Women of Influence luncheon last July.??

Leadership Defined?

  • Paula G. Ferreira , CPA, assistant managing partner, NY Metro Area, and New Jersey market leader at Forvis Mazars US , and chair of the New Jersey CPA Political Action Committee says:?

Leadership is about building something greater than yourself. It is about driving a culture where everyone works collaboratively to achieve a common goal. True leadership isn’t about simply being in charge — it’s about helping others unlock their full potential while collectively moving the organization forward.? ?

Throughout my career, I have been goal-oriented and structured in my approach to client service and coaching, setting clear objectives for myself and my team. This focus has enabled me to measure progress, make necessary adjustments and deliver an unmatched client experience to my team and clients alike. At the same time, I’ve always valued flexibility and inclusivity and have focused on encouraging diverse perspectives and ensuring every voice is heard. Recently, I have placed a greater emphasis on flexibility, recognizing that our profession has evolved rapidly. Being less rigid and open to modifying strategies has shown my team that there’s often more than one way to achieve success. Embracing flexibility allows us to pivot when necessary and stay focused on what truly matters.? ?

Enhancing this approach with servant leadership has further strengthened my team’s sense of purpose. By rolling up my sleeves and working alongside them, I create an environment where everyone feels motivated, supported and valued.? ?

Ultimately, leadership isn’t about making decisions in isolation or imposing a singular vision. It’s about driving results through collaboration and building something far greater than what any individual could accomplish alone.?

When defining leadership, many attributes come to mind, but for me, they fall into two complementary sides. The first, and most important, is responsibility. As a leader, I am responsible for my team, the organization, and our role in society. My team relies on me to keep processes running smoothly, but leadership is not a solo act. It’s my role to open doors for others, encourage their input and give their ideas genuine consideration. For the organization, the team’s ideas should drive success. For society, our actions must do no harm.? ?

The other side of leadership is personal growth and branding. One day, you find yourself in a leadership role, and with that comes pride in your achievements. Promoting your success is important but remember that someone once opened doors for you and gave you a seat at the table. Always be grateful to your mentors and pay it forward.?

?

Leadership has to adapt and be nimble. The ability to listen, collaborate and inspire others are key attributes.??

?

  • Justin W. Rice, CFP?, CSLP? , financial planner at Personal Wealth Strategies and president-elect of the Financial Planning Association (FPA) of New Jersey, says:?

Leadership to me means inspiring others to reach their full potential while fostering collaboration and trust. I’ve focused on leading with more candor, not necessarily trying to be liked but sharing with others the truth they need to hear.??

It’s always remaining empathetic and knowing that every person we work with thrives under different conditions.??

?

Leadership Implementation?

I aways try to lead how I would have liked to have been led. A good leader inspires and motivates others, while demonstrating the upmost level of integrity and offering grace when needed.??

  • Britney Glass , founder, interior designer and life coach (a former CPA turned lifestyle strategist), says:?

Leadership to me is about empowerment — creating space for others to thrive, make decisions and grow. It’s also about leading with empathy, especially in today’s rapidly changing world. I’ve definitely adapted my style to focus more on active listening and flexibility, recognizing that different situations and people require different approaches.??

?

For me, effective leadership is about empowering others to reach their full potential while guiding the team toward shared goals.??

?

Leadership is a privilege that doesn't come with title or position; but is bestowed based on actions and empathy. Serving others through leadership is an honor. I view it as an opportunity to inspire, support, and guide others to be the best version of themselves. Done properly, it is incredibly satisfying for all of those involved. The two greatest things we can do as leaders are to listen with intention and demonstrate understanding. The most recent change I made to my leadership style was weekly one on one meetings with everyone on the team. This provides the opportunity for everyone to have an audience with the managing partner and fosters our values around leadership as part of the culture of our firm.?

Emotional intelligence, empowering the team, and helping people to go outside of their comfort zones are also critical to meaningful leadership. I can't emphasize enough the importance of leading by example.
