Rethinking Garage Doors: How We Solved Space, Access, and Automation Challenges | Case Study

Faced with a series of design, operational, and structural challenges, we created a fully customized garage door solution that exceeded client expectations. The project involved integrating a pivot lifting mechanism into a single swing design, incorporating a man door with specific handle requirements, and ensuring compatibility with advanced home automation and a car lift system. We created a solution that worked smoothly within the technical constraints while aligning with the client’s vision for a stylish and efficient design.

Introduction

When we first sat down with our design partners to discuss this project, it was clear that this wouldn’t be a standard installation. Their garage setup presented a unique combination of structural constraints and advanced integration requirements. The client needed a garage door system that could fit within tight height and void restrictions, provide ample clearance for vehicle access, and include a man door with precise specifications. They also wanted the entire system to work harmoniously with their home automation setup and a car lift.

We knew this project would require more than an off-the-shelf solution. The project called for a mix of creativity, technical skill, and careful attention to detail to ensure the design was both practical and visually appealing. With a solid understanding of the client’s goals, we set out to craft a solution that fits their exact requirements.

?Challenges

Every aspect of this project posed unique challenges. First, the height and void restrictions of the garage space made a traditional door design impractical. There simply wasn’t enough room for a conventional setup to operate efficiently. On top of that, the door needed to provide sufficient clearance for vehicles to pass through comfortably, adding another layer of complexity to the design.

In addition to these structural limitations, the client requested a built-in man door with a wider handle, which needed to be positioned to align with their IFC drawings. This required precision in both design and placement to meet their functional and aesthetic expectations.

Perhaps the most complex challenge was integrating the door system with the client’s home automation setup and car lift. This meant the door had to communicate and synchronize with other systems in the garage for smooth operation. Achieving this level of coordination required careful engineering and testing.

While daunting, these challenges were exactly the problem-solving opportunities we thrive on.

Solution

To address the height and void restrictions, we designed a hydraulic pivot lifting mechanism that could be integrated into a single swing door. This reimagined approach allowed the door to function smoothly within the limited space, while still providing enough clearance for vehicles to pass through easily.

For the man door, we customized a design that featured a wider handle to meet the requirements outlined in the IFC drawings. By carefully planning its placement, we ensured that it provided convenient access without compromising the overall design or functionality of the garage door.

Integration was another major focus. We equipped the system with dry contact signals and proximity sensors, enabling it to work seamlessly with the client’s home automation setup. Additionally, we coordinated the door’s operation with the car lift to ensure that both systems worked together in perfect sequence. The result was a garage door system that not only met the client’s expectations but also elevated the functionality of their space.

When the project was completed, the result spoke for itself. The client was thrilled with the outcome, and the system performed exactly as intended. The custom hydraulic pivot lifting mechanism resolved the space challenges, the man door added convenient access, and the integration with home automation and the car lift enhanced the overall experience.

Beyond functionality, the system also delivered aesthetics. Its sleek, modern design complemented the client’s property and created a finished product that was both practical and visually appealing. By focusing on the details and working closely with the client at every stage, we delivered a solution that met all the criteria.
