Rethinking Diversity: Beyond the Obvious Labels ??
"Diversity: The art of thinking independently together." – Malcolm Forbes
Are we seeing diversity in its proper form?
It's often said that the world's beauty lies in its people's diversity. But how frequently do we genuinely recognize the full spectrum of diversity—our own and that of others?
As an executive coach, helping leaders navigate diversity and inclusion is at the core of my work. Coming from a diverse background myself, I deeply relate to the challenges, the subtle nuances of bias, and the barriers that often go unnoticed. Frequently, unfairness is so subtle that a third-party observer might not even notice what happened.
A Common Misconception About Diversity
Recently, a business leader from a diverse background shared an interesting thought with me:
"When we talk about diversity, the conversation typically focuses on Black people and women. The rest of the population is considered all the same."
This isn't the first time I've heard this, and it makes me pause.
?? There is a massive gap in how people understand diversity—including their own. The world's narrative around diversity often unintentionally creates exclusions within inclusion, leaving some voices unheard. Many people, even those from non-traditional backgrounds, may not recognize their own diversity or the biases that shape their perspectives.
My Mission: Expanding the Lens of Diversity
? Empowering Business Leaders: I help leaders expand their understanding of diversity to foster truly inclusive cultures and help others move up the career ladder.
? Supporting Diverse Talent: Many professionals from diverse backgrounds struggle to advance. I work closely with them to unblock the invisible barriers holding them back.
? Helping Leaders Avoid the Fear of "Getting It Wrong": Not everyone who supports diversity comes from a 'perceived' diverse background. Many leaders worry about saying the wrong thing or unintentionally offending someone. I help them navigate this space with confidence, empathy, and fairness.
A Simple but Powerful First Step
Diversity isn't just about race, gender, or nationality—it's about valuing the differences that make us unique.
?? When speaking with someone from a different background, do you recognize that they, too, are diverse in their ownway?
?? Being human and being fair is the best starting point when you don't fully understand someone else's culture or experience.
?? Valuing differences and practising absolute equality in day-to-day interactions—not just in policy—makes all the difference.
For example:
?? The "Perfect English Speaking" Bias – A highly skilled professional with an accent is overlooked for leadership roles because they don’t ‘sound’ like the majority.
?? Neurodiversity Overlooked – Workplaces push for diversity but don’t consider adjustments for neurodivergent employees who thrive in different environments.
?? The “One-Size-Fits-All” Approach – A company celebrates cultural diversity but schedules all social events around alcohol, unintentionally excluding certain groups.
