Rethinking Career Paths: Over Half of Job Seekers Consider Industry and Role Changes

Did you know that over half of U.S. job seekers are open to a major career shift? According to a recent survey by The Harris Poll and Specialized Recruiting Group, 56% are interested in switching industries, and 52% are considering new roles. Additionally, 58% of workers have made at least one career switch. In contrast, only 14% have remained in the same field and have no plans to change.

Generational Insights

Gen Z and Millennials are more interested in switching job functions (66% and 58%), while Gen X and Boomers have historically made more complete career changes, with 39% and 44%, respectively, having transitioned multiple times.

This trend reflects that career switching is becoming a norm across generations. Employers must develop strategies to support employees as they navigate career transitions, such as offering reskilling programs or clear growth opportunities.

Top Industries of Interest

If barriers like time, money, or qualifications were removed, job seekers would pursue roles in:

  • Health care and social assistance (11%)
  • Professional, scientific, and technical services (8%)
  • Finance and insurance (8%)
  • Arts, entertainment, and recreation (8%)
  • Education (8%)

Why Job Seekers Make the Switch

Key motivations driving career changes include:

  • Desire for more flexibility (51%)
  • Lack of advancement or fulfillment (46%)
  • Inadequate compensation (31%)
  • Skills better suited for another career (28%)
  • Desire for more time off (27%)
  • Pursuit of a more positive work culture (26%)
  • Interest in faster-growing industries (22%)

Barriers to Career Changes

87% of job seekers say they would switch careers if they had the necessary resources—such as training, financial support, or opportunities. Many are also influenced by seeing others thrive in non-traditional work settings like remote work and flexible hours (76%). Despite this interest, common barriers include:

  • Having to start over (38%)
  • Lower salary due to lack of experience (27%)
  • Limited opportunities in the desired field (25%)
  • Needing to accept a lower-level position (25%)
  • Being too invested in their current career (23%)

Employers who address these challenges—through initiatives like professional development or mentorship programs—can attract and retain top talent.

The Impact on Employers

Although 22% of hiring managers report an increase in career switching, most (67%) believe the trend has remained stable. Additionally, 75% think limited job opportunities today may discourage employees from making a change.

"In an era where career paths are increasingly non-linear, cultivating a workplace that values adaptability and continuous growth is essential," said Bill Stoller, Express Employment International CEO.

Businesses that embrace these shifts will be better positioned to attract and retain top talent in a competitive market.
