Rethinking Canada’s Northern Potential
For over a century, Canada has sought a northern export solution beyond reliance on U.S. ports. While Churchill, Manitoba has been the go-to option, Port Nelson was once envisioned as a key gateway to Hudson Bay. Today, with global markets evolving and supply chain dynamics shifting, Moosonee, Ontario offers another unique opportunity.
Strategically located near James Bay, Moosonee sits at the northern terminus of the ONR, which is seeing renewed investment. By modernizing infrastructure and extending trade corridors, we could create a port that directly connects Canada’s natural resource sector to global markets, particularly Europe and Asia.
Engaging First Nations Leadership Before any planning or feasibility studies begin, First Nations must be at the forefront of the conversation. This is their land, their communities, and their economic potential. Sustainable development must be done with, not just for, Indigenous Peoples.

Why Now?
A Vision for the Future Canada must leverage its northern geography as a strength rather than a limitation. While revisiting Port Nelson is a step in the right direction, expanding our vision to include Moosonee could create even more opportunities for trade, sustainability, and Indigenous economic leadership.
Let’s think beyond the conventional and work towards a future where Canada’s northern potential is fully realized.
