As a Fractional CMO, Business Strategist, and Advisor with over two decades of experience, I've come to understand one thing unequivocally: being "busy" is not the ultimate measure of success in business. Yet, it's a refrain I often hear from business owners, a badge of honor worn proudly as if it signifies accomplishment. But let me challenge that notion.
If you find yourself constantly proclaiming how busy you are to friends and family, it's time to pause and reflect. Being busy should not be the default state of your business. In fact, it might be an indicator that something is amiss.
Let's face it, if you've been in business for years but still find yourself running from project to project, you haven't built a business; you've created a job for yourself. You're self-employed, not a business owner. And while loving what you do is paramount, if it consumes every waking moment, leaving no room for other joys in life, it's time for a strategic reassessment.
Your tombstone will never read, "He/She was a busy business owner." What truly matters is the legacy you leave behind, the impact you make, and the life you lead beyond the confines of your business.
Transitioning from merely running a business to creating a business that affords you a lifestyle is the ultimate goal. If your business is profitable, it's time to devise a strategy that allows you to step back and let the business work for you. You should be focusing on the bigger picture and living a life that aligns with your aspirations and dreams.
