Rethinking Business: The "Robinhood Model"

The other night, while explaining my business model to a potential funder over dinner, they referred to it as the Robinhood model. It caught me off guard—I’d never thought of it in those terms before!
For those who are new here, I run a marketing agency called B.D.Y. CONSULT LLC, and 80% of our clients work with us at little to no cost. How? Through an equitable business model that allows our larger, higher-paying clients to subsidize the cost of services for smaller businesses and organizations in addition to grant funding.
I’ve always described this as social entrepreneurship—using business as a tool to create a positive impact—but hearing it framed as the "Robinhood model" made me realize this approach is widely recognized, especially in the finance world.
This method has allowed my agency to do work that truly matters, like helping small businesses access millions in funding through storytelling and branding. In fact, as I shared in this article, offering free or low-cost services has not only built trust in the communities we serve but also led to organic growth. Our approach attracts the right clients, builds long-term relationships, and aligns with our mission of prioritizing impact over profit.
For us, it’s about rethinking business as a tool for equity and empowerment.
