Rethinking Annual Performance Reviews: Navigating the challenges and opportunities

As professionals, we often anticipate annual performance reviews with a mix of excitement and trepidation. But what happens when the outcome doesn't align with our expectations? Here are five crucial questions to consider:
Do you already know what your review will say, and are you comfortable with the summary?
Attempting to predict your review can take up a lot of wasted time and energy and whilst you may think you’re on track, it's essential to remain open-minded. Regardless of expectations, feedback provides valuable insights for personal and professional development. Reviews can be poorly phrased (trust me, I’ve been there!) but there could still be some valuable insights to help plug the gaps that will elevate you to the next seniority grade.
What happens if the review goes differently than you hoped or planned?
Sometimes, despite our best efforts, performance reviews may not reflect our perception of our contributions. It's crucial to understand why this disconnect exists and what actionable steps can be taken to address it. Which leads me to....
What if you disagree with a review? Is it appropriate to challenge?
Absolutely! Constructive dialogue is essential for growth. However, it's vital to approach disagreements with professionalism and evidence to support your perspective.
Do you have a forum to challenge?
Organisations vary in their approach to feedback mechanisms. Understanding your company's policies and channels for raising concerns is key to resolving disagreements effectively.
If you disagree with a review in addition to feeling dissatisfied in your role for a considerable period of time, what are your choices on next steps?
Staying in your role can offer a window of stability as well as the opportunity to address concerns internally. A good friend once told me that whenever you’re upset with someone or something- draft an email, leave it firmly in your drafts for 48 hours and if you still feel the same, address it in the way that’s appropriate and right for you. It’s a winner! Particularly for someone like me who used to be a hot-head in their 20’s with an immediate need to resolve disagreements! It’s these nuggets of advice throughout my career that I’ve taken on board and which have made an impact. Personal development never stops as long as you’re prepared to keep an open mind, hone your self-awareness and create some space between what you hear in a review and what is meant.
