Just after 9/11, a journalist who's name escapes me stated "American History will now be defined as "America before 9/11, and America after 9/11." This indeed defines New York City in the minds of most any New Yorker.
September 11th 2001, a day that began so sunny, peaceful and warm. A morning that, up until just after 8:30am, seemed destined to be the kind of end of summer day that makes New York City such a popular subject in paintings and pictures. There's no need for me to rehash the events in the never ending hours that followed. We know of the pain and ongoing challenges faced from witnesses to first responders, doctors, nurses, police, EMT's, fire rescue and families of those lost and those with mental and terminal illnesses.
I do remember the unity in America later that week though. People of every race, business, political party and Nations all coming together to offer support, relief, Prayer and security.
Today our Country and World are divided, perhaps more than at any time in recent history. The blame over the pandemic, policing tactics, extreme political positions, religious ideology, race, access to education, the digital divide and economic injustice are just some of the issues continuing to keep us from finding common ground, even on the most simple challenges facing us.

This week we'll hear unlimited speeches, see and hear documentaries and news reports across media platforms, and relive so many emotions and anxieties we cannot erase from our minds.
My Prayer for the 20th Anniversary of the September 11th attacks on America is for us to remember September 12th, 2001 and the days before the political rhetoric, invasions of Iraq/Afghanistan and Patriot Act. The days when we as Americans and the World united against terror and against hatred during candlelight vigils and gatherings from houses of worship, to parks and community centers are memories I want us to dwell on.
We can best honor our heroes and those lost on 9/11 by continuing to champion justice, erase inequality and working to create a Worldwide community where terrorism is no longer possible.
