Rethink Purpose!
Imagine yourself waking up, getting dressed, and coming out of your home. When you get to the bus-stop, ask the person standing beside you where he or she is going. Let’s say his name is Udeme, he will appear shocked and probably think twice before giving you an answer. If he is nice, he may answer you and reveal his direction, however vague that might be. Imagine that in response, you also tell him that you are headed in the same direction.
The matter is not over, so when the bus going in that direction stops, both of you board the bus, as you well know, each person’s final destination defers from one bus stop to the other. If you decide to follow our friend "Udeme" to come down at his bus-stop be sure that he will be suspicious of you.
You think it through, and you decide not to do that but stay in the bus till the last bus-stop. The bus conductor will expect you to come down and face your journey naturally. However, recall that when you left home you had no particular place in mind but to follow someone else.
This is a sad reality of how some of us run our lives. I hope it is not too late to wish you a happy new year. If you went through 2023 without your own plans, I would advise that you be more deliberate with 2024. Maybe your excuse is that everyone is going in that direction, and so without a critical review of your current state and realities, you were running another person’s template.
During the holidays, my son, who turned 20 last year, started reflecting on his childhood and all of a sudden asked me how the years flew by so fast. The worst thing that can happen to any of us is to look back and have regrets for the decisions we failed to take or for those we took just following the joneses.
I know that when you started that job, you never estimated that you would still be there five years later. Or maybe you moved into that neighbourhood just as a stop-gap, with no plans for what to do next. We can look at our careers and feel that we are far away from our projections. This can lead to taking rash decisions and following the templates of others without adequately planning for what suits your peculiar circumstances.?
Life is adding up, day in and day out, and before you know it, those dreams will soon become tales by moonlight. I am speaking to myself more than anyone else. I have changed the goal post on so many of the goals I set, and I always find a way to justify my decisions.
Then life happened; already in the month of January 2024, I lost two dear ones: a lady in her late fifties and a young man in his prime before forty. This hit me hard. Time is running out, and whatever one wants to do, this is the time to do it.?

Don’t let the ideas you have go to the grave with you; please note that they are bigger than you. There are people connected to that dream, that vision, and that initiative. If we fail to execute, it will impact them.?
Purpose is the key to fulfilment in life. As you chase your daily bread, what is the purpose? Is it to feed and clothe? Your existence is for the benefit of a larger good, a divine arrangement to fulfil purpose for your creator; it goes beyond your personal plans and wishes. The unfortunate reality is that history has already been written as you wake up and go to bed daily.?
It would be helpful if you paid more attention to how that history would be replayed after you were gone.?
This year I have written down my goals, but more importantly is the consciousness that everything laid upon my heart to impact in line with purpose must start NOW; no more excuses.
This year, I will be focusing my thoughts on encouraging leaders to rethink purpose—for themselves, for the team, and for the business.
As I mentioned above, it is bigger than you. Find the bigger WHY and pursue it.
