Retail's Magical Number 7

Retail's Magical Number 7

Dubbed ‘the magical number seven’ by psychologists when it was discovered in the 1950's, on average, the longest sequence a normal human brain can remember is about 7 items.

So, to make things easy, here are 7 themes we at Kantar see shaping European retail in 2020 and beyond, that your commercial, shopper & category teams must stay on top of:

1.   China – the worlds digital retail pioneer is inspiring O2O retail across the globe. What will come next and how will this reshape our retail world?

2.   Algorithms – data will infiltrate all channels, enabling pinpoint decision making and truly service oriented solutions. If algorithmic data is not already your friend, start getting to know it fast!

3.   Borders – online cross-border trade will continue to disrupt traditional geographical and political barriers. Global trade will come under the spotlight of authorities and you'll need to be ahead of new legislation

4.   Discovery – new paths to purchase will continue to impact your brand visibility. As your control lessens, agility will be key to creating awareness and driving conversion.

5.   Ecosystems – service, entertainment and lifestyle partnerships will be the future in this new battleground for loyalty. Unlikely partnerships will emerge.

6.   Sustainability – no longer just a lifestyle choice, this will be a must have part of all that you do and communicate. Failure to step up will see you stepping down

7.   Volume – driving volume is the mainstay for Retail but initiatives will be innovative and fast evolving. Keeping relevant and being truly different will be the challenge.
