Retail Reflections From March

Back again here for another newsletter on retail and I have to say that it was a pretty busy March for retail. Now I was going to write this earlier this month but I never got the chance to do it. Now that I am here and have some time to spare I will just get right into things as to what took place last month in retail and a whole lot has happened during that time. It seems that the retail industry is going through a lot of changes in North America.

With that said I am going to talk about some news that I probably wrote about last month or a couple of weeks ago and that is with Nordstrom leaving the Canadian marketplace after announcing that it was planning to close all of their stores across Canada due to slow sales and of course dealing with their pricing situation in which they saw most of their items being higher in price in Canada than items sold in the USA.

It is a sad scenario because I thought that Nordstrom was going to do well since arriving in Canada about 2014 but sometimes that isn't the case at all with most retailers because they think that because they succeed in one market they think that they would succeed in another market due to thinking that it is the same because of the geographic location but that isn't the case because businesses in Canada are run way differently from the USA.

Nordstrom learned that the hard way and that I guess proved to be their demise in Canada and have fallen in the same path as Lowes, Target and other American retailers that have tried to crack the Canadian marketplace. With that said I will make a small note with some good news though to end this entry. Shake Shack, the American fast food outlet will be making its way into Canada. So that should be interesting as to how they will do in the Canadian retail marketplace.
