I needed some storage for holiday decorations and headed to my local Big Lots store this morning. Here we go again.... The news about Big Lots closing 80% of its stores was not a surprise.... but a big reminder of how much the retail world is changing. For years, Big Lots served as a go-to for budget shoppers, but shifting consumer habits, the rise of online shopping, and fierce competition (think Amazon and Walmart) have forced them to rethink their model. It’s a tough loss, but also a sign of the times—retail isn’t just about selling products anymore. It’s about creating experiences, embracing technology, and meeting customers wherever they are, whether that’s online, in-store, or somewhere in between.
For us as business leaders, this change is yet another call to action. How can we anticipate these shifts and make sure we’re still connecting with our customers? It’s all about staying flexible, being willing to reinvent, and constantly looking for ways to add value. Disruption like this is now constant and can feel unsettling, but it’s also an opportunity to find new ways to make you and your company irresistible. Let’s use moments like this to learn, adapt, and keep moving forward.
